If you are just now getting around to changing it (for the first time since 1982?), why bother? The old oil is probably barely broken in.

Valvoline and some other synthetic makers have an "old auto" or 70,000 miles + synthetic that is designed to clean up oil seal deposits and prevent leaks when switching from dino oil to synthetic. I've not been brave enough to try it, and I don't know if it works in bikes. You might try the Valvoline site - I'm too lazy to.
