Asking which of these bikes would make the best urban/suburban vehicle, is like asking which corpse at the morgue would make the best dance partner. Get a Speed Triple and call it a day.
After having 18 months experience with a 2003 Mille R, I can honestly say I'll never own one of those things.
Saturday was 75 degrees and sunny. Was the owner out riding? Nope. Bike was in the shop getting the valves adjusted.
And don't even think of doing it yourself. first of all you'd need 200 bucks worth of specialty tools. You have to take the whole damned engine apart.
180 bucks every so many miles.. just to say you have an italian bike? No. No No No. The old 929 (niether bike is stock mind you) stays right with it anyway.
To be truthful MPS, calling a Tank Top, Board Shorts and Flip-Flops "Protective Gear" might mislead some of MO's readers into thinking that the South Beach Diet means losing weight by grinding large sections of meat off your body, while break dancing on asphalt. -Sean
Totaly off-topic...... no relation to any previous posts.... Nothing to do with motorcycles in fact......... just a gratuitious slam at total strangers.
Yup, he's back, At least he's still talking to God or Joseph Smith or whoever the voices are telling him.
Guys like him make life so entertaining, God bless 'em, every one!
100k miles on a GL1800...wish I had that kind of time. Saying he had an 01, that would be roughly 25k a year. And he found time to ride a ZX-9 and a V-Max.
But they have no resale value. Why would longride own one of those bikes?
does your multi perform well in the hot weather [ overheat at all]? You said you had a 954. Do you miss all that power or is the multi powerful enough? Whats it like at highway speeds and what does it top out at? I imagine around town It's a hoot to own and ride. Let me know , thanks
You're undoubtedly right. I just think that the Rockster is an underappreciated bike. But in terms of midrange scoot, you can't beat a good v-twin. Both the Duck and the Buell handle great. Unfortunately, I worry about the Buell's long term reliability.
I own a CBR1000RR and it's an awesome bike - for canyons and the racetrack (where I haven't been yet - it was stolen and some stuff was broken; I'm waiting for parts), and even for ex-urban tooling about and highway driving, if you can stand being racked, because the motor is so smooth and the whole bike just feels so well designed and built that it's just a pleasure to ride.
In town, or in suburban neighborhoods, though, it's almost a disaster. It heats up super-fast at stoplights and you can feel the power loss from the 40+ degree temperature rise; the gearing is poorly matched to town driving; the riding position is ill-suited to ultra slow speed maneuvering; it's frustrating to not be able to use it at all. The list goes on.
Having sat in Florida traffic in the heat for a number of years, I can safely say that the 1000RR is generally a poor choice from a purely practical point of view, and a Buell XB-12R or something similar, or something featuring a cooler-running, lower output engine like those on the various 600cc bikes, would be better choices. Motorcycles, though, are incredibly impractical purchases, all in, so while generically not as fun to ride in the situations you describe, just the fact of owning a 1000RR or GSX-R750 might overwhelm the physical pleasure of a more appropriate bike.
I should emphasize again that droning along I-75 or I-95 or what have you on a race rep. would suck.
