The Cracktacular 599

The 599 seems like a cractacular decision.

The old Hornet was well liked on its own, but against the old Fazer it lost out slightly: especially on the tank range, a good gallon less!

The New Fazer/FZ6 is a big advance: stiff aluminum frame, Fuel-injected R6 engine, spiffy underseat exhaust (rather than bagscorcher-style high-side exhaust).

And there is a new Hornet for Europe.

So what do we get? the OLD hornet, without the fairing, with the old god-damned carburators, the silly-pipes. And an asking price of~$1k MORE than the naked SV and probably $700+ more than what Yamaha will charge for the FZ-6.

Thank you MO for the Redbook.

What is Honda thinking with the 599?

It has no price point advantage for a "standard" motorcycle. Why buy the 599 when a mere $800 will get you on a 919?

My '03 CB750 Nighthawk is a great commuter mount. It's as dependable as gravity and I had enough cash left over to customize it to my liking. Sure it wasn't "lightest in its class"- it WAS the class.

Where is it now???? Gonzo

Sadly I'm getting the impression that the industry is buckling to the poseurs...for shame.

I guess if I want a good old fashioned standard with a big mill I'll be heading to the Suzuki camp for a naked Bandit 12. Of course they'll probably discontinue that, too.

Somebody tell Honda to get that CB1300 over here and they'll have me as a customer for life. I would tell them myself but hey, I'm just a rider, not a poseur.

Last year the most exciting design from Honda was a 50cc scooter, the ruckus. This year, its a pair of 50cc bikes, the coolest of which is not street legal and way too expensive. With the new for 03 SV, the 04 FZ, and perhaps a Kawasaki z700, Honda is so far behind the eight-ball with the Hornet 599, it isn't even funny. $7k?!? Even a Speed 4 is cheaper...

Ooooooo ... stickers!

I've been griping for months that Honda should bring out a replica RC51. I mean, Aprilia adorns their Mille with two versions, and their GP riders haven't won squat! So Honda surprises me with this Nicky rep and ... well, it's pretty unimpressive, with just some stickers slapped over the stock bodywork. *yawn* ... I suppose it was beyond wishful thinking to hope that they'd honor Colin with a full-on WSBK rep. Woulda been cool ...

I think the 599 is a fantastic move, following up on the success of the 919.

I wish Honda would buy a movie studio and put this management and marketing brilliance to work in films. I'd love to see "Gigli II" and "The Further Adventures of Pluto Nash" someday.

Still raving about the paint

So the 919, an otherwise perfectly handsome motorcycle, is available in silver, and a color called "matte uranium" which sounds a lot like, well, matte silver. So you can have silver or silver.

Who's ordering the paint? What happened to Honda red? What's with all the matte black everywhere? Why does this make me nuts?
