The Blue Ridge Parkway is a very dangerous place. Stay away. Virginia is as ugly as North Carolina. Go ride in Kansas: much better roads and scenery.
Seriously though, I prefer the BRP mid-week, off-season, by my lonesome on a quiet bike. What a great way to get to nowhere in particular. And there are other roads along the BRP just as nice with wider shoulders that go largely unpatrolled. Keep your eyeballs open on the 45mph BRP.
