I keep hearing that and for all I know it's true but it is also immaterial. Urals are cheaper in Russia. So what? I don't live there and couldn't care less. It won't help US BMW dealers to tell 20-somethings, "I know it's $14K here but it's only $12k in Europe!" They'll bye the Gixxers anyhow.

Sorry, but it doesn't. Why does BMW charge more for bikes sold in the US? I've yet to hear an explanation. Because they can? Revenge for WWII? Maybe it's reverse dumping. Triumph pretty well blows them out of the water with their pricing structure. Labor and general costs in England are every bit as expensive as in Germany, plus BMW is part of a major corporation and has been in business since the 20's. Triumph is more or less a labor of love for a real estate developer yet their bikes are consistantly more reliable, more competitive in their individual market niche's and less expensive......
BMW has been resting on the reputation the airhead and early K models built for the last decade or so, time for them to come back down to earth.

Even if the performance is competitive, which it may well be, and even if the price is close to competitive, which it won't be, the Gixxerkids won't buy it because BMW is perceived as an old man's bike, and the BMW guys won't buy it because, well, they are old men. 
Seems like moronic marketing to me. Perhaps BMW is after some sort of "halo" marketing strategy to shake the old man's bike label. Good luck with that. Trix are for kids. BMWs are for function comes first minded old guys with fat wallets. I recall BMW's last attempt at a serious sport bike. At least this one looks sharp, not like a beached whale like the old K1200S. No doubt it will meet the same fate though.

I figure it'll cost about 26k here... same as the 1098, MV augusta F4 or the Aprilia.... and it should be just as well specced to be competitive. I'd love if it cost a bit less but i don't think it will.
Anyway i need to see the road version, hear it, and get some riding reports first, but I reckon i'll get one just to have something a bit different that's NOT a Ducati.

RRP on a fireblade is about $19k
Ducati 1098 $26k
We make cars that sell for 80K here and 30k in the states... they're made here, there's no taxes or duties or freight...they should be cheaper here. Jaguar sells cars here for 160k and 60k in the states... you guys have got it GREAT!
previously the US dollar was high and so you engoyed low prices... now your dollar's low and you're still enjoyinmg low prices cause they can't just jack the prices up as fast as your dollar drops.
The US market has (through bulk)meant many vehicles got built that wouldn't have otherwise... but on an individual consumer basis, you guys have always had it good.

.....I checked out an R1200RT before I got the FLHT, a buddy of mine is a salesman at one of the local BMW joints. I thought it was a really nice bike, good handling, decent power, not as comfy as the HD but not bad, same basic price etc. The kicker was they didn't want to deal at all, I had cash down plus a trade in and they were all "there's the bike, there's the price" kind of thing. HD was willing to wheel and deal and I really liked the FLH better anyway so verpiss BMW...

there's always that......new Harleys don't seem to require much more than oil, plugs and filters now and then. I don't know of any consistant problems with stock bikes. People complain about hot running but it's a 96 in. a/c engine, what do they expect? Use Full Syn. and get some air flow over the motor instead of idling along in some dam* Shriner Parade in 100* heatAnd best of all you don't have to worry about exploding rear hubs and clutch jobs that require dismantling the entire bike.

I'm losing track. Basically though it sounds like one way or another you guys get a pretty good deal so your initial Whinge about BMW over charging americans and the US subsidising Europe was a wee bit off track....
