do you get this out of a magazine. the r6 isnt the the best 600. every bike (jap) but honda is faster but on top. and the r6 has to have its guts rung out of it to get it to go. and you say this would be a good beginner bike. you must not ride sportbikes!!!

What he's saying is something like an SV 650. Couple years old, cheap to buy, cheap to fix, get the Naked one, because you WILL drop it. Oh, and it will be WAY faster than you are for a long time. Most people that get 'bored' with a 70 hp bike are just not able to make up in the straights what they lost in the corners. A 650 can get you into all the trouble you want.

How did you find anybody in a car willing to race you? It seemed to me that people in cars caught on to the fact that even ordinary motorcycles will flat kick some very expensive car's asses.

Not dropping your bike for one whole summer doesn't exactly make you an expert. And OF COURSE you lost money if you sold your bike in the Fall. That's when all the lemmings go back to cars. The prices escalate again in spring, when the same people start thinking about motorcycles. 600's are peaky, lightning quick, and will get you into trouble in a nanosecond. The largest proportion of motorcycle fatalities happen between the first few months, when you're intimidated, and about a year, when people start thinking they've got this motorcycle stuff all figured out. I've been riding nearly 40 years, and I'm still learning. If humility is ever a good idea, it's on a motorcycle.

My friends daughter bought a 1987 Honda Hurricane 600 for a first bike. A comfortable, good running, easy to handle classic bike that only had 2 thousand miles on it. She loves it and no need to move up to anything else. I was I had seen first!

I agree with your Nighthawk selection, and with the other posts that suggest a used (cheap) bike first. Check the classifieds, there are a lot of 2 year old bikes for sale with a couple thousand miles on them; either the owner chose the wrong bike or the wrong sport.

I started (again) with an 82 Maxim 650 I got for $150. As I fixed it up I learned about the bike, and rode it for three years while I researched my next bike. A left-turning mini-van totaled the Maxim, and I picked up a new 750 Nighthawk using the insurance money as down payment. 20,000 miles later I am still happy with my choice.

Pretty soon here Suzuki is going to release a fully faired SV650S to the U.S. market, which may not be quite as friendly as the Kawi 650R but is something that will probably be one you'll want to keep longer before going to an inline 4 supersport.
