Yep- you can get bags and a top box- It's called the MultiStrada. You keep throwing out ideas, but in the end the bike you need IS the MTS1000. Just think about it for a minute. Same motor, same basic frame, slightly different brakes (but optional ABS), same tube bar- what else do you need? The Milti is perfect for you.

I was looking for any opinions or thoughts on BMWs 650 singles. I really like the look of the Xcountry but I really don't know anything about them. They do seem pricey, but are they worth the extra money?

A quick search for "canbus fuel pump" at BMW MOA Forum turned up exactly one such situation. Was a first yr canbus bike having fuel pump problems down in Mexico.BMW's new electronic system while good in theory has left a lot of people stranded with their fuel pumps shut off. It's to be seen is they are solved for 2008.
While I'm sure Seru can go to Adventure forum and turn up more, I do have better things to do with my time - and this thing I can garouunnntttee - Seru will bytch about BMW's no matter what. Then again, I think HD makes the most boring products in the bike universe, so that makes us even I suppose.
Ace is right - folks consistently overestimate cost of BMW ownership. And another thing, BMW owners are notoriously whiney about their bikes. Princess and the Pea syndrome.
And finally (FINALLY!) my 07 R12RT has STILL not puked its final drive NOR has it had a canbus glitch. And the stuff about having to have the double secret built with solid unobtanium super duper gel battery charger is nonesense...a plain old battery tender hooked directly to mr gel cell works jus fine...
and my fav BMW dealer guy - who will forever go unnamed - NO hints! - is always telling me great stories about know it all GS "Druids" and so forth. To be in the BMW fold is to never be without laughs at the expense of your overpaid brethren! That alone is worth the price of admission - admittedly a high price.
My bottom line advice to the initiator of this thread is this: if the BMW is going to stretch your budget, don't do it! If it won't, give it a try. But go to a good dealer (join MOA, access forum and learn who is who) and buy a nice low miles used one with plenty of warranty left....
You left out my friend that got a serious butt-kicking from a BMW dealer for having the gall to actually price-shop a BMW! Sounds like a fun crew to deal with! And for the record, you aren't even with Seru, cause he doesn't own a Harley.
Correctamundo! When I was shopping for the new bike, the Strada was on the final list. Versatile, practical, fun, (as much as any Duc can be) and fugly. Right up my alley. In a Finnish motoring mag BMW 650 Xmoto (not Xcountry) was dead last in mid size allroader comparo. Most expensive, worst. But your self esteem may need some propping up by a fancy brand.

Yeah, I thougt my 21yo K100rs was ugly when I bought it. I, also, thought it was top heavy. Weird how things change......to be honest with you the only reason I don't like the multi strada is that is really fugly... not in a way i like. though I'm sure i could get used to it...

The motors are dam near bullet-proof, and require a valve clearance check every 6000 miles. Most of the 955s need few adjustments. Don't know about the 1050s. And the sound the motor makes at about 5500rpm and up is guar-on-teed to put a BIG grin on your face!
A Dealer in the SouthEast has a Black '07 (non-ABS) for $9525 OTD, and if you want ABS, he has White and Orange ones for $10,500 OTD.

The early triples were a bit of a handful. The current 1050 models are not nearly as bad. I believe the interval is 12k. It just a shim and bucket set up so little difficulty for the mechanically inclined.Is that a typo pushrod? Valve clearance every 6K? That seems really frequent to me. BTW- Ducs were 5 or 6k and the current air cooled bike is 7500. You know what Ducati did to space the interval- changed the manual. Nothing mechanical changed. Go figure.

If the new BMW's are anything like the earlier ones valve intervals are a moot point anyway. My '85 K 100 with screw and lock nut adjusters needed no adjustments is nearly 60k miles, for that matter my '02 1200 Triumph 4 cyl. needed no adjustments either in over 40k. unleaded fuel, clean burning engines and improved metallurgy pretty well closed the book on valve adjustments IMO. Probably a good idea to check at around 5~10k initially, after that it's just an excuse to drop stuff inside your engine.

Cruz Your-os? hm, To be honest i went and sat on a Night Rod (just for ****s and giggles.) it felt good, was really comfy. Just think its going to be extremely heavy.
