While your comment is both interesting and extremely well written, isn't that also the best possible illustration of how great Rossi is: so good that no other rider of his day can touch him?
Let's assume for a second that he was still great, but not quite as extraordinary as he is: he would have at least one very good rival: Sete. Perhaps also Biaggi. And then people would go on extolling the virtues of a great rivalry between these three riders and how interesting and entertaining MotoGP is because of that.
To me, the best illustration of the greatness of Rossi is the difficulty to find a tough match for him. He's at another level. Isn't that the epitome of greatness?
