Its inevitable that lots of people are going to be killed in traffic adcidents. Last year 43,000 people in the States. To put that into perspective, in Iraq there has been merely 3,000 deaths throughout.
And this 43k is not even a big number. In Argentina where I live there were 10,400 deaths last year. That would translate to 82,000 people if scaled to US population. And if you count in vehicle miles travelled you should at least double that figure again.
