I've got a Kawasaki 500. It is formally called a 1973 Mach III (H1) three cylinder two stroke. Some people called them widow makers due to unexpected wheelies in the middle of fast turns (like freeway on ramps). I guess you are referring to another model.

Think USED.
Find a good used bike with as little plastic as possible. Something you can learn to hone your basic skills like:
remembering to put the kickstand down before you get off.
remembering to put the kickstand down before you get off when you're really tired.
remembering to check that the kickstand is locked and the bike is stable after you put the kickstand down.
Learning how to pick up a bike that has fallen over after you forgot to put the kickstand down or when someone else knocks it over (if we ever find that guy he's toast).
There are a few other things to learn after you master the kickstand but you will catch on and a good, simple, used bike will let you .

OK, you have lots of beginner bike suggestions; my suggestion is about continuing street smarts education. 1) get every book David Hough has written and go to bed with each night. 2) subscribe to Motorcycle Consumer News. And when (if) you graduate to a LARGE (700 lbs and up) touring bike, get Jerry Palladino's Ride Like a Pro DVD. Worth 100 times the price. As he points out, don't get 20 years experience by repeating the first year's 19 times. Continuing education or possibly die too soon. (On my 17th motorcycle).

How irresponsible of me. You are, of course, right. The young neck cannot support a bike as weighty as the 14. The smaller hat is the wiser chioce.

After I completed my MSF course. All I did was go and get the M endorsement added to my liscence. No extra MVD written test required.
