Larry Grodsky (RIP) wrote a column about that once. He said that a bicycle helmet offers more protection than a beanie helmet and almost as much as an open-face DOT motorcycle helmet. They're both made of the same shock-absorbing material, except the bicycle helmet doesn't have the same shell. And it's because of the shell material and big air vents that the bike helmet won't pass the DOT requirements. DOT requires it to resist a sharp object puncture, which actually is pretty unlikely in the majority of crashes. Pity though, if bike helmets were allowed maybe people would wear them at least. They're very light on non-intrusive.

Lawrence Grodsky could have summed it up better than me. His sister said that Larry could handle all manner of traffic, but was unable to predict the nature of deer and he figured that if he was killed in a motorcycle accident it would be in a collision with a deer - and so it was.
IMHO - collisions (not accidents) are caused by the intersection of two types of drivers (riders) - one driving recklessly and the other not paying attention. Avoid being one of those two drivers and you can avoid collisions -except for deer.

I know that part of the reason for the shell is to skid along the pavement without abrading away the shock-absorbing material. With cyclists generating a lot of internal heat compared to a motorcycle rider, I doubt they could make a lid that would do dual duty and still provide that protection.
The kid is only 24 years old - I think some of you are being hard on the guy. MOST - not all -sport bike riders at some point didn't wear a helmet. Now that I am older and wiser I don't ride without one, but he will have to live with the results of that crash - and you guys don't need to talk crap on him for it. Yes it was a busa - The lady in the Jeep did the old left turn in front of the bike - lucky he didn't die.

He should be thanking his lucky stars it wasn't worse, learning from his mistake and doing his level best to act like the leader society expects him to be. Part of those big dollars is the expectation that with kids looking up to you, you have to behave to a higher standard than your garden variety idiot.
I'm glad he didn't die and if he bucks up and behaves like I expect him to in the wake of all this, then perhaps a bunch of kids will see his newly ugly mug and think twice about riding without a helmet.

I remember reading that 18 is the age of majority in Pennsylvania. At 24 BR should be held to the same standards that all of the rest of us folks are. No license = he gets the same punishment as any other person.
No helmet? Even if it IS the law, take some time to figure it out. His stupidity in this respect is its own reward. Smile for the cameras, Ben. You big dummy! A Hayabusa as a starter bike? Who is the moron that sold it to him? He's not a mtorcyclist to my way of thinking, he's a poser.
It isn't the bike, folks, it's the squid twisting the throttle. I wonder how many real rides he has taken. As my grandmother used to say when I did something dumb: "Don't come crying to me, you've got nobody to blame but yourself!"
I've been riding more than 30 years and I won't buy a Busa or a ZX-14 or a (fill in blank) becasue I know that little voice on my shoulder will talk me into doing something stupid. I just don't want to have to deal with the consequences of being dumb.
Call me a wimp, I call myself finally getting mature. I save my "Go Fast!!" for the track. And it's not only a helmet, it's jacket, back protector, pants boots and gloves. ATGATT! Riding gear is real cheap compared to doctor bills.

OK, I might have let it go that he's young and stupid. But...
A) He wears a helmet for a living, you'd think he'd have sorted out WHY. Would he go against another team without a helmet? The magic 8ball says, "Signs point to no" So he's really not protectinga whole lot of gray matter if he's thinking that asphalt and steel will hurt less than grass and a linebacker.
B) There was an interview of him where he completely trashed sportbikes and sportbike riders because he's a Harley guy. Stating that Hareley's are safer because he's in a group (Logic = ZERO). He also stated clearly that he HAD an endorsement to ride (Magic 8ball says, "Signs point to NO"). I've a problem with any rider who'll speak out against a style of bike simply because of the bike. We all ride. Mature and intelligent people can disagree with what you ride and why but we all accept that it is dangerous.
C) Yes, we do need to talk crap about this guy. He's a "role model" for some, and the role he's modeling is that motorcyclists are idiots. I particularly don't want to be put into that group.

The difference is that when famous people do it, it's news, it's interesting to the biomass, and it usually makes all motorcyclists appear as idiots who ride only as a means to speed up their death.

Yeah thats right. Somebody should explain him (slowly) why everybody in the field uses a helmet.

Excuse me, he wears a helmet (and shoulder pads, rib pads, etc) to protect himself from a 300 human traveling at say 12 mph, but won't wear a helmet to protect him from a 4000 pound car. Must have flunked math AND physics AND common sense.
He DESERVES to be trashed. No license - nice move Bennie. As far as I am concerned, he is a footbal player that had enough $$ to buy a Busa. That does not make him a motorcyclist. He's no more a motorcyclist than the 72 year old lady who lives next door. And some spilled on a stone floor,discoloered it!I found out there is a difference between black folks and white folks making it.Ihad a glass of black folks moonshine with ,I swear a collared green sticking out of it!Sort of like a poorman,s mint julip!The I had white folks moonshine,and saw Jimi hendrix,So I decide in the name of integration to put them together,in the interest of science and all.Lethal!Best drunk I ever had,worst hangover.

The problem here is that Ben is a well known public figure, a stupid one at that, but famous nonetheless, so the repercussions will be felt far and wide, and as usual the rest of us pay the price, legislation wise, insurance wise, or just in the way we are looked at in general.
And to be honest, it is not the kind of bike he was riding that is the problem, it is the whole arrogant attitude about it, no license, no helmet, no experience, no training.
I ride with friends that have the latest and the fastest, and everybody has been trained, has track days under their belts and know when to let it hang and when to chill, it is called maturity and experience, of course we all had to start somewhere, but the ATTITUDE has to be there. And protective gear is a must. A cheap Wal-Mart full face helmet would have done wonders for his ugly mug.
