I would love to have the ability to lane share here. Unfortunately, it's not legal. Some riders will do it but I won't because the comatose cagers are not accustomed to it at all.



Of course, if they made it legal any time soon, I'm not sure I'd do it for a long while anyway. Most people aren't even aware of the current state-approved policies on motorcyclists. Perhaps if there were a major media campaign to let people know it was legal, I might feel more comfortable.



I also worry about some of the half-baked tards assuming that it's okay to lane share their SUVs with my bike.



On a related note, I wish people would realize that constantly changing lanes in stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper traffic usually gets them nowhere.

He's been called the Valentino Rossi of lane-splitting but may be the Muhammad Ali of it too... gliding along... effortless... Flyin'. Been lane splitting in California off and on since '75, never seen anything like it.

I have lived in Tokyo, Japan three times and used Kawasaki ZZR 400 and ZXR 250 motorcycles for daily running there. My colleague at work lived next door to me. He would leave for the office very morning at 9:10 AM in a car and I would leave at 9:15 AM. I passed thousands of cars every morning in going to work about 6 miles away. I would arrive at work about 9:35-9:40 AM and he would arrive at 10:00 AM or so. I would do that here if it was legal since I have had years of practice doing it without mishap. (I live in NC, where this is illegal.)



In Japan there is a space at the head of the line for scooters and motorcycles to sit at a red light. We would all filter to the front and then leave first when the light changed. It is good hand to eye coordination practice to drive like this.



Average differences in speed were 20-40 km per hour between cars and bikes in the lanes. Of course it was a little risky if a car driver wanted to block the mid lane space, as some would do at times.

I live in upper S.C. (illegal here) and used to lane frequently, but not anymore. It makes people soooo mad they would spit on you for splitting and/or shoot you if they have a gun. And many of them do have guns.

I split daily if traffic is congested on or off freeway. When it's moving above 5 mph, I generally stay in my own lane and ride with the flow. Depends on whether I have a date. ;-)



Splitting is vital in congested areas, and I have yet to see any serious accidents or altercation from it in 23 years of riding -- save that some drivers do get "annoyed" at us for getting ahead. They seem to forget we don't have music, heat or a/c to keep us comfy.

On the 599 press launch in 05 I lane-split behind former endurance champ Doug Toland (who is a development guy for Honda) and it was terrifying but very fun. He was doing 55+ in STOPPED traffic, so I followed him figuring he would get it first if I stayed 50 yards back. Totally insane!

Just in case lane splitting becomes legal in the other 49 states, I suggest we go ahead and implement a tiered lane splitting system. This way we go ahead and nip the problem in the bud before it comes to the attention of legislators. You guys work out the details.

Addendum: I say we make the shoulder a lane for riders under the influence. That way they can fall over anytime without issue and they can collect all the nails and screws in their tires and they'll sober up by the time they've repaired their tires.
