Re: Buying a Motorcycle for the Compulsive or Impulsive- Part I

Back in 1964 with much contemplation I bought a new Honda 305 Superhawk. Great first bike. After a year a new Suzuki X6 Hustler. Today an SV650.

SV650

Gabe, Nice one, and an important, needed article for those just starting out. Biggest mistake I have seen for nubies is not taking the course, and getting too much bike.

A 305 Superhawk was considered to be a lot of motorcycle for a starter bike back then. I eventually got a 305 Scrambler, but prior to that I had several smaller bikes, starting with a Honda 55 step thru trail bike! VWW

Yeah Kellen, like you can read at more that a grammer school level, or would have taken heed of Gabe's sage advice anyway.

"Those cheap 70's and 80's UJM's (Universal Japanese Motorcycles) are now rusting away in landfills and salvage yards across the country."

No they're not! They're in my garage!

Very good restraint on your part. I thought you were gonna ask if Gabe was gonna teach your grandmother to suck eggs next.

I am compelled to buy a motorcycle on impulse.

I just bought a screaming eagle v rod, totally on impulse after suffering the compulsion to buy a new bike for a year. every bike I have ever owned has been bought the same way. it is exciting

Re: Buying a Motorcycle for the Compulsive or Impulsive- Part I

Your right, the Honda 305 Superhawk was considered fast in its day. I could keep up with the Triumph 650's up to around 60 mph. I switched to the X6 Huster because I believe it was Cycle World that had a road test. The cover of the magazine said:

1. 0 - 60 in 6 seconds flat!!

2. 6 speeds!!

3. $600!!

I drove to the dealer and test rode one. (In those days you could test drive bikes) He said the key was in it - take it for a ride. Going around a corner and gassing it the front wheel came off the ground. Whoa. Rode it around 10 minutes and went back to the dealer and traded the 305 for the X6. Biggest problem with the X6 was the brakes were lousy compared to the Super Hawk's double leading shoes on the front end.

I've ridden an X6 that belong to one of my buddies back in my highschool days, and it was a quick bike. Remember Suzuki's advertisement touting 14 second quarter miles? The had some little Japanese guy that weighed less than 90 pounds that posted those times, but never mentioned his weight in their ads. VWW

Re: Buying a Motorcycle for the Compulsive or Impulsive- Part I

i am in the unfortunate position of having no idea as to how to go about purchasing a motorcycle. When are you guys dropping off my YZ250F dammit? i bought a Seca 750 once tho, my first bike man it seemed fast at the time. I had no problem not crashing into things, but i did have trouble not just dropping it 90 or 100 times in parking lots and driveways and peoples' yards and stuff.

Like that new fake email address Dr. S.

I was thinking, if I buy a new bike will all those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain?

Or maybe not. But at least I'll be able to fix 'em myself. Not have to hand my bike over to some pimply faced cretin with a nice roll-a-way "They all make that noise"...
