I was just in a H-D boutique the other day (can't really call it a showroom) and they had a 2005 superglide on the floor for $11,995. It seemed like a such a good deal I almost bought it. Then I see the new Superglide for only $200 more with FI, 6-speed, and nicer wheels. More bike for the $$$ What's going on in Milwaukee? It seems like their prices are finally coming back down to earth.
Night Rod - same almost good bike in a different color. Street Bob - a Super Glide with apehangers and spoked wheels, and $1000 more. Nothing new, nothing special. The Street Bob will be gone from the lineup in 2 years max. Maybe HD is changing their marketing from buy one and add new parts to make it look like you want it, to we'll make enough different versions that you don't have to do that. Gee, just think, instead of 32 models they could have 52, or 72 models. Be great for filling up those big showrooms of theirs.
I heard a Packard Merlin run in a Mustang too but it didn't sound like a Harley. Now four Wright Cyclones about 100 feet over your head sounds like a s**tload of the best running Knuckles you've ever heard...
That new Street Bob is the shizz, I gonna' have to rob a bank or something, I swear I'm going to have to flip a coin between the Thruxton and this, Maybe I can use a little leverage on the '05 Dyna I was looking at, after all 5 speeds are so last Tuesday..
I'm thinking ape-hangers were more of the chopper look. The original bobbers (early 50's ?) were all about removing weight and going fast. Ape-hangers came later in the 60's. Can't say for sure, but that's what I seem to remember.
Is the 6 speed a way of trying to attract younger buyers? It's sure an unnecessary item. The 88 engine has a little bit of a broader power band than an X-6 Hustler y' know. I wouldn't think that the extra gear would make much acceleration difference. It might even be slower due to the extra time wasted in shifting.
Maybe the Japanese will have to retaliate with 7 or 8 speed gearboxes on the supersports.
Eventually we end up with snowmobile style belt drives 'cause you get infinite ratios that way.....
