CARB nicks Dynojet for a Million Bucks !!!

The latest AMA press release sez CARB fined Dynojet for selling Power Commanders that allow motorcycles to go out of EPA emissions compliance.... Dynojet has agreed to sell a PowerCommander that will meet EPA and CARB requirments for sale in California.

I'm not sure how that's going to work as recalibrating EFI for more power is usually done by richening the mixture and slowing the advance curve coupled with a modified free'r flowing exhaust and less restrictive intake, all of which are illegle under current EPA laws. Just tweaking the fuel injection isn't going to make much difference I wouldn't think.

Over on the HD Forums they're still arguing whether they should run loud pipes or not...Clueless as usual, the Gov'ment is three steps ahead of them all ready. Hope they all saved their stock parts LOL....

It's only going to get worse. Didn't CARB also order all those license plates taken back from the people who went through the trouble to make dirt bikes street legal?

Don't bother trying to comply with the law. They'll just change it on you and ding you retroactively.
I usually keep my stuff stock anyway 'cause I'm not a tinker'r and I am a cheapskate, once you start changing stuff around it tends to snowball and before you know it you're in the bike for a couple of grand and it don't really run any better, just louder and less gas milage. The exception being my late lamented Bonneville and my Suzook with the Holeshot street can, which sounds way better than stock without jetting or intake work.

Mods I make are mostly comfort and handling, not engine...usually works better that way.
I think that as exhaust makers adjust to the ever tightening restriction and develop the technology the power commander will still have its place. Most of the motorcycle manufacturers over develop the bikes (sportbikes mostly) and then adjust the motors output to make compliance. The way I see it, the average litre bike is most likely capable of 190-200 hp out of the box with out mods. It's the computer that limits the hp. Power Commander's bypass the function, in most cases, that limit hp and the top speed limiter. In the end, when exhaust companies start working "with in the rules" but are still able to make advances in power then all this will be a mute point. Power Commanders will still fly off the self as long as there is a market for sportbikes.
Lezeee,,,,California Air Resources Board, Air Quality Management District, Air Resources Board, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Automotive Repair...all fighting to keep your brown tinted Kalifornia air safe and clean. Good luck. Just wait 'till the BAR & AQMD make smog tests on motorcycles manditory. That means Buz will have to crush his Huffy!

I was going to say almost the exact same thing. I can't tell you how many guys I've seen spend endless hours and countless dollars chasing a minor increase in HP. In the VStrom forums there are dozens of threads of people doing everything from hacking a chunk off the muffler can to spending $800 - $1000 for a "better sound and more performance." Start with the pipe, then the Power Commander, then start downloading maps, blah blah blah. And several posts from guys lamenting they'd ever messed with the stock exhaust to begin with.

There was a huge bru-haha brewing in 07 in the HD mags about the EPA shutting down any mods to exhausts, be they "Stage 1" setups from HD or aftermarket. The way the articles read, 1/2 of America would be put out of work.

As for me, I'm saving up for Dr. Richard Balzack's Comfy Cutout Seat. I'm way past giving a crap about what my exhaust sounds like, and the DL has enough torque and hp out of the box to make me grin.

Yeah, I've done it myself and I have several friends who've thrown money at a bike and wound up with a small performance increase and a tempremental engine that ran like crap below 4k, I think other than very minor mods it's just a waste of time and energy. Espescially jetting, the Triumph and Bandit web sites are full of guys saying I rejetted my bike, cut holes in the airbox, added pipes etc. and now it runs like sh*t, what do I do?????????

I usually just ride the darn things, for the $3 or 4 k some people put in their Harley motors they could have went and bought a used GSXR and went as fast as they wanted.
If It Saves Just One Engine...

Here's a post I found without even trying, just clicked the "new posts" button at the VSRI website:

I have ordered LeoVince but the local dealer need 1 mounth to solve it. Ok than....cut the bullsheet..., so I have made some exhaust incision.....and removal of some internal organs......More air flow, more low grunt noise....nice. But after the engine got hot - in 10 - 20 kliks the coughing came back at....3700-3800 rpm only if I go flat or easely. If I push-it ant jump fast over 4000 rpm - no problem. After 4000 km runs great...
I drove-it 4000 km with this problem .....No modification. Finally I received the the LeoVince exhaust. Happy and verry optimistic I proceeded to fix them. And drove it. Shame....same problem - even more coughing....I purchased a PCIII usb specially for my bike and tried some maps. There was some improvement but not to much and red led with FI some time on some time off.
What shuld I do? Otherwise I like verry much this bike.

You show this guy how to fix problem! He need TWO Power Commanders! He need more klazy holes drilled in exhaust pipe. He need patented Klazy Klen's Magic Chemical(H2O) Splay Tank to cool engine. Just rev it harder and that fix it you bet. Only Fo t'ousand dollah!

Pretty amusing. Imagine how much faster this guy would actually be if he spent the $1K+ on a track school instead of the stupid exhaust.

They'll never catch me! And if I'm in a chase, by the time the parts are done vibrating off of it, there won't be anything but handgrips left anyway. ;-)

Gut them baffles, get rid of that stupid balance pipe, bore a bunch of holes in the airbox with a hole saw and stick a K&N in there, run a 195 main jet... 145 pilot toss the needle and open the mixture screw up 10 turns, file the screw holes on the advance plate so you can crank in a few more degrees, grind a few thousands off the cylnder head to get the compression up around 14:1....she'll run like sh*t through a goose ga'dammit !!!!!!!!!
Welcome to the Brave New World. Thank God the Black Jimmy Carter may win the nomination, and maybe the Prez. Between all the grand ideas and zero results he has so far, I figure we might be safe for another 4 years. Maybe 8. Things are looking up!
McCain looks like he's in with a chance from the other side. Probably the pick of the republican litter, better than some bible banging tub-thumper anyway.

ONE lousy bike pic out of 127? What, they don't have motorcycles there?

I'm sending him more money! If you don't like him, that's all I need to know. Thanks!
Please do. If he is half as successful as the new Democratic Congress, you have a lot to look forward to!

I actually agree with you on that one: what a spineless bag of miscreants the Dems have been. Not one thing of any significance has changed since they got a majority. However, at least Obama isn't a closet Republican like Hillary, whose most recent claim to fame is crying over the results (literally!!) from Iowa.

Read em and weep my friend! My, how she is so much like her wonderful hubby :-D
