I usually keep my stuff stock anyway 'cause I'm not a tinker'r and I am a cheapskate, once you start changing stuff around it tends to snowball and before you know it you're in the bike for a couple of grand and it don't really run any better, just louder and less gas milage. Mods I make are mostly comfort and handling, not engine...usually works better that way.
I was going to say almost the exact same thing. I can't tell you how many guys I've seen spend endless hours and countless dollars chasing a minor increase in HP. In the VStrom forums there are dozens of threads of people doing everything from hacking a chunk off the muffler can to spending $800 - $1000 for a "better sound and more performance." Start with the pipe, then the Power Commander, then start downloading maps, blah blah blah. And several posts from guys lamenting they'd ever messed with the stock exhaust to begin with.

There was a huge bru-haha brewing in 07 in the HD mags about the EPA shutting down any mods to exhausts, be they "Stage 1" setups from HD or aftermarket. The way the articles read, 1/2 of America would be put out of work.

As for me, I'm saving up for Dr. Richard Balzack's Comfy Cutout Seat. I'm way past giving a crap about what my exhaust sounds like, and the DL has enough torque and hp out of the box to make me grin.

If It Saves Just One Engine...

Here's a post I found without even trying, just clicked the "new posts" button at the VSRI website:

I have ordered LeoVince but the local dealer need 1 mounth to solve it. Ok than....cut the bullsheet..., so I have made some exhaust incision.....and removal of some internal organs......More air flow, more low grunt noise....nice. But after the engine got hot - in 10 - 20 kliks the coughing came back at....3700-3800 rpm only if I go flat or easely. If I push-it ant jump fast over 4000 rpm - no problem. After 4000 km runs great...
I drove-it 4000 km with this problem .....No modification. Finally I received the the LeoVince exhaust. Happy and verry optimistic I proceeded to fix them. And drove it. Shame....same problem - even more coughing....I purchased a PCIII usb specially for my bike and tried some maps. There was some improvement but not to much and red led with FI some time on some time off.
What shuld I do? Otherwise I like verry much this bike.

You show this guy how to fix problem! He need TWO Power Commanders! He need more klazy holes drilled in exhaust pipe. He need patented Klazy Klen's Magic Chemical(H2O) Splay Tank to cool engine. Just rev it harder and that fix it you bet. Only Fo t'ousand dollah!

Pretty amusing. Imagine how much faster this guy would actually be if he spent the $1K+ on a track school instead of the stupid exhaust.
KLAZY KEN'S EXHAUST PIPE CIRCUMCIZER NOW AWAILABLE AT KLAZY NEW PRICE!! WHY PAY T'OUSANDS DOLLAR FOR NEW PIPE? YOU TAKE MY CIRCCUMCIZER YOU MAKE PLENTY NOISE!! Only $1,234.00! (Dremel Mototool Not Included. Klazy Ken not responsbull for cough, sputta, stall, bike no run no more)

Welcome to the Brave New World. Thank God the Black Jimmy Carter may win the nomination, and maybe the Prez. Between all the grand ideas and zero results he has so far, I figure we might be safe for another 4 years. Maybe 8. Things are looking up!
I'm sending him more money! If you don't like him, that's all I need to know. Thanks!

Please do. If he is half as successful as the new Democratic Congress, you have a lot to look forward to!
I actually agree with you on that one: what a spineless bag of miscreants the Dems have been. Not one thing of any significance has changed since they got a majority. However, at least Obama isn't a closet Republican like Hillary, whose most recent claim to fame is crying over the results (literally!!) from Iowa.
