Colorado road question....N. of Steamboat Lake

Question: Has anyone ridden Route 129, north from Steamboat Lake State Part beyond the paved surface? It goes about 30 miles to a small town of Slater, CO at the Wyoming border. I wish to know if it is doable on my 2007 Gold Wing (have ridden for 15 yrs).....Thanks!

It has been many years, but yes...I fished the Little Michigan and the Trout Unlimited lease on the N Platte on CO 129. Was like a macadam county road here is GA. Just fine two up.

What a great location, too. I was about waist deep in the Platte when a T Storm jumped up over the Zirkle Range to the west. We scrambled to get out of the water before the lightning started. Barely made it so shore - ditching our carbon fly rods - the storm passed by in a blink heading east towards the Never Summer Range and leaving the Zirkles just buried in snow above about 9000'.

In Cowdrey, CO, Stockman's Bar - if still there - is a nice place to take a break. I have no idea if public access to the Little Michigan River is still available but it is a great place for easy, flat water trout fishing.

Those alpine lakes you can hike into - only about a mile and easy walkin'- up near Rabbit Ears pass were not worth the walk except for the fine scenery.

Go for it!! Very empty country. You'll be surprised. You will be right in the middle of a big 20-30 mile wide valley between the Zirkles and Never Summers....fantastic views and no annoying Calif people who have build overblown goof ball houses. (sorry, Buz but you Californicators have a lot to answer for! nudge, wink...)

Clarification: Occasionally I combine trout fishing and bike rides. I have custom Fenwick pack fly and spin rods of the break down type.

Rods were built up from blanks - I did everything but the decorative wrap. I have an old friend who - even though he is in the ins business - is quite the gifted artist. No need to impose my lack of art talent on the general public!

Taking a fishing rod kinda forces you to get off the bike and trundle back off the road. You only gotta go about 300 yards to escape 99% of the great unwashed. All in all a VERY good thing. And another GREAT byproduct - no boring HD peps with their loud pipes and flamboyant couture.
Ahh yes, fishing. Nothing stirs the soul more than spending the day trying to outsmart one of the stupidest creatures on earth. Maybe that is why drinking and fishing go together; the more you drink the closer you get to fish thought patterns.
Ha!

I guess you don't get much chance to do any fishing. Your main worry is that the lake will catch on fire.

I love to fish. Cooler of beer. Nice book. Warm sun. Peace and quiet. Sometimes I even bait the hook.
I just go straight to the drinking and skip the the rest!

Ive gone fishing without a pole so many times I cant count. Still managed to catch the same thing my dad did, a buzz...
Thanks for the input...and I'll try to check out the bar! Gravel roads can change, a lot. I'll hope for another more recent vote of "go for it!".
If motorhomes and such can make it then a Goldwing will.
