As a lover of little fun things, I should be sweating for one of these. but there is a problem. Itty-bitty 2-smokes. If such a machine were available with, say a 200cc 15-20 hp 4 stroke, I'd buy one today.

It's not that I hate 2 strokes - I race a KTM 200EXC, but they don't make good street machines. There is also the problem of size. I'm built like MO's esteemed bossman, and although I could see loving a Derbi for a while, wringing its neck every time I want to get away from a stoplight would get old.

Rumor has it that the japanese companies are going to start doing to the 85cc MX class what they did to the 125 & 250 class, meaning 170cc liquid cooled, four valve 4 strokes are coming. These motors would make ~20 hp and weigh ~50 lbs.

Imagine one of them in a Derbi-like bike. Sign me up right now and I'll sell my CRF150F soon-to-be-dual-sport-motard.

I've got a question...

Is there anything in the US that combines street styling, a 100 to 200cc 4-stroke engine making around 25hp, wet weight below 225 lbs and comfort for 2 people for a few hour ride?

If there is could you give me some info on where to find something like that. I live in michigan and 2 or 3 days a week I commute over 100 miles round trip. All highway miles around 75-80 mph, so 65 mph max will not do. I am currently leasing a car and would like to keep the miles off of it if i can.

I have been thinking about an older bandit or something similar but these little bikes are very intriguing to me. Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Little Two-Stroke

I think you just (almost) described a 250 Ninja. It is about 350 pounds full of gas, but an aftermarket exhaust should shave off 30 pounds. A VTR250 might be even lighter, although they are getting pretty old. I'll lbet there's a few low-mileage bikes sitting in garages in Michigan somewhere.

I'd also look at the NX250 or the KLR250/super sherpa- I know you want a street-styled bike, but if you want light weight you should consider a dual sport.

Re: Little Two-Stroke

thanks for the response,

The VTR250 is pretty sweet in its most recent form, but it is not available in the US, and the older version is pretty ugly.

I love the look of naked bikes and have always wanted to convert a half or full faired bike to a naked look with the bugeye headlights on it. I wonder if anybody has done this to a 250 ninja? That would reduce the weight quite a bit also.

I love that derbi gpr 125 nude, its just too bad we can't get them here in the U.S. Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Why can't we get the cool bikes that Europe has over here.

Give us americans a better choice motorcycle manufacturers!!!!

PLEASE!!!

Great article.

I was going to motard my tt-r125le, but now I'm considering selling it to buy a SM50.

Would they be similar?

Has anybody ridden both?

Being able to ride it on the street would be great.

I wonder if I could fit a 250F into that frame? Hmmmm
