FIM will alow it. Ducati won't mass produce a V-4 because the "Boss" pretty much put it in stone that the L-twin will be the race bike because they need to race what they sell. So, buddy, you won't see the V-4 in WSB or AMA until after the 2010 race season, if ever. Now, with the current WSB lap time closing in on the GP bikes there needs to be a system in place to differenciate the WSB bikes from the "prototype" GP bikes. I believe that the way for them (GP) to really differenciate the things is to keep the liter bikes in WSB and AMA as the "premiere class". But expect a rules change by 2008 that will make the "Superstock" class disappear and the "allowed" parts on Superbikes to shorten.
Actually i think it is not debatable. The 999 is clearly very capable. it won it last year and bayliss is kicking butt on it this year. I think, without reading the article, the whole idea is to be able to be competitive at a lower cost. I support the notion, despite how i feel about privateer racing a duc.
Anybody who thinks wsk would be better off without ducati is smoking something.
at the same time the whole debate about twins vs. i-4 seems silly. it's cool to see them racing each other. whatever makes for better racing is what we should support, not some missplaced brand loyalty.
if you want some interesting thinking read dennis noyes' article on speedtv on how close wsk and motogp bikes are becoming.
It seems to me that if Aprilia can build a 4 for WSB Ducati certainly could. There would be nothing to prevent them from continuing to sell twins if that's what the market demands. Many sportbikes have been pretty succesful in the marketplace without any race pretensions.
The new 1098 is still almost 20 horse down on the Japanese fours in stock form so I would hope that WSB would allow this change at the very least if not 1200 cc's. HP/liter is always going to be less for a twin than a four unless very expensive measures are taken (as Honda did with it's 8 valve oval piston GP bikes). I say cut the Ducs a break.
Does Ducat read MO? Can they accept that the GMP is right?
Yep I agree. Too me this whole increase the twin by 100 cc now and 100 cc latter is very silly. It's like Ducati reads MO and can't accept that kpaul, the Great Motorcycle Prophet (GMP) is right that Twins are dead in racing...
