What about a manufacturer like Porsche. If I remember correctly, it's impossible to purchase a new 911 with zero miles. Why? Because every one is tested on the track before delivery to the dealers. If it's right at the factory, it'll be right at the track, and right in the customer's hands. So why does Honda say I have to break in my engine, but Porsche does not?
(And I'll give you $5 to stop saying "you nailed it"...seriously, it's in every post now.)

If they ever let you fly by yourself, point your plane into the wind on the downwind numbers of a 5,000 foot strip, give it half throttle, and see when it takes off.
Maybe the retired Colonel was telling you the BEST way to take off, not the ONLY way.

Great counter argument thanks for your patient and well thought out response.. Keep in mind kpaul is trying to clean up his sophomoric attitude.. and wants to learn from you much more experienced and wiser riders and owners..But I learn best when I question conventional wisdom...
I do have faith in modern technology...I remember reading my Dad's old Chevy Impala owners manual and it had a break in period thing and the new cars don't. But in some ways motorcycle engines are behind or maybe just different than car engines.. Car engines with their low rpm operating bands may not need break in periods anymore. Car engines don't have valve adjustments to do, like high revy I4s or Ducati V-Twins.. So why doesn't MO ask Kawasaki via Sean why break-ins are needed?

I think most of the stuff talked about in the article has been known for many years. Whack the throttle now and then, but don't do any one thing for very long, and don't operate at a constant speed for the first few miles. It was my impression that this was MOSTLY about heat cycles, because everything contacts everything else in slightly different ways at different temperatures and or speeds.

Yep Sean sent that to my wife I think... Ok I look somewhat similar to Michael Douglas. However, the older and heavier I get the more I look like a cross between Douglas, Robin Williams, and Randy Quaid The more weight I put on the more I look like Randy.. When I am slim or take it off the more I look like Douglas and Williams..My hair gets curly when I grow it out like Williams Mork & Mindy days... Now I am on the porky side. When I slim down prior to our big race I'll post my picture... longride is right about something after all.. 20 years ago my first wife said I was like Michael Douglas without the charisma or charm...

LOL I think in this case the Wikipedia is safe to use as a source. My point was that small aircraft engines were low revving air and air cooled..

In an article in American Rider, Joe Minton when to the Honda factory and watched them assemble Gold Wings. At the end of assembly, each bike is placed on the dyno and run to redline at full throttle.
Then of course the owners' manual says to break it in gently.

That can't be right...why would the manufacturer tell us to break in a bike's motor gently? I mean, there's nooooo way they would want to just cover their butt's generally. (And if something did go wrong during that period, to reduce the number of warranty claims).
This absolutely cannot be a logical conclusion because the prophet says so. I am slowly falling in line.
