Well, this is something that is definately worth getting upset over. However, after reading the first few comments sent, I can see why the AMA, off-roaders, OHV's and the rest lost this issue. I've lived in California and in particular the High Desert area, Victorville, since 1976. I've watched most all of the land be closed around here. And throughout the years, there has always been one consistant. Those people everyone is so quick to call, Tree Hugging, Sandal wearing, Mother earth living, spotted owl saving....etc. Well, they are very organized, well funded, well lawyered. Any of you remember ANY OHV organizied, well funded, well lawyered fights. There's the problem. About the only one I really remember is over the Desert Tourtis (however it's spelled) and the Barstow to Vegas Area. I believe it was the staff of Dirt Bike, A van Dike Brother and a FEW other's who really put it on the line. The even did some Jail Time. But that was about it. How many of the Ohv, 2 wheelers, mountain bikers are willing to go the distance. How many of you are willing to chain yourself and your Buggy to a tree, have it impounded, anddo some time for your rights. I've been in Oregon for the Spotted owl Crap, and I saw the environmentalist chain themselves to trees, gates, heavy equipment. This is a very powerful picture on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC.
The biggest problem is not the Honest everyday OHV'er. It's the one's with the, "I'll do what ever I want attitude." You know the ones, you've seen the pictures, remember the pictogliphs in the desert, with the TIRE TRACKS through them. Or how about the idiot on the KX500 tearing through the desert with the silencer blown out, or the buggy with 4 grown adults hauling ass and all 4 of them have a "Corona" in their hands, It's all about exposure. Why hasn't Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Polaris, KTM, Husky or any of them gotten involved BIG TIME. They make billions off of us. How about Michelin, Pirelli, Dunlop, Bridgestone. Where are they? Or maybe, Unical 76, or Texaco, Bel Ray, Maxima, Silkolene, PJ1? Where's FOX, No Fear, AXO, Acerbis, Alpine Stars, Shoei, Bell, AGV. Have you seen their multi-page ads in every issue of Dirt Rider, MXA, Cycle News, Dirt Bike? How about Pro Circuit, FMF, Troy Lee Designs. These people make millions off of us every year, Seen their Semi's at the races, driving down the freeways, parked at In N Out. How about Jeremy McGrath, Ty Davis, Shane Watts, Larry Roeseler, Johnny Campbell, Ivan Stewart, Ever notice any Sponsership patches that say,"Save our riding areas" "OHV and endangered species". Take a look at mail order companies,Chaperal, Moto World, Plano, Rocky Mountain, Recreation Unlimited,Tucker Rocky, those T-Shirts with the babes in thongs standing next to a CR250 or A GSXR 750. Ever seen a "SAVE our OFF Road Parks". Not just NO, But HELL NO. They all want you money, buy their stuff, help support Jeremy, wear 1-800-collect, no fear, buy his little die cast motorcycle replica, get Jeremy's supercross video game. I too, admire Jeremy McGrath, but he ain't doing a damn thing to help me keep my riding area open. Hell I went so far as to buy 2.5 acres of my own land so I'll have a place to ride.
Don't just write the BLM, or about the AMA and what they haven't done. Look for a "Save the OHV area's" ad in you next issue of MXA, Dirt rider,Off Road, Cycle news, If you can find it, I found one, it was about 8th- 16th of a page, buried and almost non visable. Take a look at Yamaha's YZ250F ad. Hell they used a picture of OHV's main opponent in their ad. Not once however did they refer to him as someone who is taking away your opportunity to ride that YZ250F. Only "Hail to the New Chief, intro. the YZ250F four stroke" Notice the ad about 2001 Yamaha Contingency Program. Tells you how much you could win if you buy their bike and win races. Going to be pretty hard to collect without places to race. Canyou say Good by to , Lucerne Valley, Best in the Desert, Ridge Crest,,,
