Re: Fontana: Day two and redemtion for Nicky

If Chandler was robbed by anyone, it was the horrible job the track officials and workers did at dealing with crashes. The bike in question lay on the track for TWO LAPS before they decided to do anything about it.

Also, did anyone see Hayden's crash in Formula Xtreme? This was an awful example of lack of action on the part of the track officials. His exhaust was hanging off for the better part of a lap, but they did not black flag him. Then, after it caused him to crash at the end of the front straightaway, he stumbled up to the air fence and collapsed, where he stayed for three laps before anyone bothered to get up to him. Horrible.

Re: Fontana: Day two and redemtion for Nicky

I was there! It was an awesome day, and Nicky was all alone out in the front, WAY ahead for pretty much the whole race. That red flag was a giant let down, because the battle between Mladin, Bostrom, and Chandler was so fierce. The crowd was relatively small in comparison to the HUGE facility, but everyone was very enthusiastic, and we all let the racers know how much we loved em. Awesome races, and a really wonderful day.

Also I got to sit on the new Yama FJR 1300- I felt my wallet tingle!

As I passed by the Harley tent I spied the V-Rod and the gaggle of onlookers surrounding it. I must say the thing looked cool in person and that Porche twin staring you down was neato, but I couldnt help wondering why you'd pay as much as you would end up paying, when you could score an FJR1300 AND an RC51 for probably near the same amount of dollars...

I cant wait for the next superbike races to come to Fontana but hopefully they'll throw a little more effort into the advertising campaign, and get more of the fans to come out and show the support that these great racers deserve.

Redemtion?? Common!!!!! Check your spelling. Redemption!! OK?
Go Doug!

Go Doug!

That Ducati must be some kinda bike, the way it's resuscitated Chandler's career. He should have a great season once he gets dialed into the bike (and vice versa). I wonder what the factory Kawasaki riders are thinking when the old man goes flying by ....
Re: Go Doug!

Having previously bashed Chandler and Picotte for not being contenders, I guess I must seek "redemtion" and give my congrats to these two riders. Thier true riding abilities really shine when they're thrown onto a bike and only have a week or two to learn.
Re: Fontana: Day two and redemption for Nicky

No one has said a word about the crashed rider that kept Chandler off the podium. I've been following this guy, #31, Dr. Jeffrey Something or Other, DDS, since the late 1990s. I remember the first time I saw his name in a race program, noting that he was the only rider to list his official title (Dr. Jeffrey, DDS). At a couple of races I've looked up the name of the slowest Superbike rider, the backmarker who was first to be lapped, and there it was, Dr. Jeffrey, DDS. I've seen him crash in person at least twice, both times at Road America. In 2000, he rode off the track near turn 7, rode over to the fence, leaned his bike against the fence, and stood shaking until the corner workers came over and made him get back on his bike.

I missed the good Doctor last year, but when I saw him at Fontana, I told my wife, "There's that damned fool who rode off the track at Road America, the one who's so damned proud of being a dentist that he lists it on the racing program." That was the first time the leaders lapped him. When I saw the #31 bike sprawling across the middle of the track, I wasn't surprised.

I have two questions. First, was the good Doctor all right after the crash? The bike looked like it fell over at extremely low speeds, which isn't hard to believe if you've seen the Doctor ride. Second, why do they keep sending this guy out on the track with the Superbike racers? It provides some comic relief, but it is dangerous for the fast guys.

we ALL hate dentists, but ....

just 'cause you're a dentist doesn't mean you're a bad guy. only the top few riders are good enough to do nothing else but ride. the rest have to do SOMETHING to pay the bills. might as well get rich by yanking on dentition.

and by the way ... about 20-something years ago there was a dutch dentist by the name of gerritt wolsink who came awfully close to winning a world motocross championship. a factory suzuki rider, he was mighty fast, despite his DDS.
Re: Fontana: Day two and redemption for Nicky

If you know about him, I'm sure Doug does. The AMA may review his qualifications this time.

It's a shame, but it's all part of the game.
Re: Fontana: Day two and redemtion for Nicky

The FJ and RC are not cruisers. For someone looking for a Harley with more power (and probably more reliability) than the average hog, the V-rod might be the bike that they WANT. Isn't motorcycling all about our WANTs? That said, I wouldn't touch one with a 10 meter cattle prod. I think that the 998S is overpriced, and though I could buy an FJ1300 AND an SV-650 for the cost of one, I still WANT a 998S.
Re: Fontana: Day two and redemption for Nicky

I love it Hayden wins the race and you have comments from the third and fourth place finishers. Chandler is an awsome rider but fourth is fourth get off the guys tool. Is ducati advertising on here or something. What is it like being an ad *****?
Re: Fontana: Day two and redemption for Nicky

The comments were part of and about the only real story in the race. Hayden had no comment about that story. He wasn't there.
Re: we ALL hate dentists, but ....

I didn't say he was a bad guy. In fact, he's provided me with a good deal of amusement, and I sincerely hope he wasn't hurt. But he is a slow rider, so slow that he is a menace to guys like Chandler and the rest. He really shouldn't be on the same grid as the pros, for his sake as well as theirs.
Re: we ALL hate dentists, but ....

Dealing with back-markers is a big part of racing at almost all levels, but especially for Superbikes. I think it makes for more interesting racing. And, no rider makes a Superbike starting grid unless he turns in a qualifying time that is no more than 112% or the time for the poll-sitter, so the good doctor couldn't have been all _that_ slow.

Besides, when there is a rider on the course who truly is a "menace" to other riders, the other riders have no qualms about letting everyone know that. I've never heard a single rider speak out against the doctor. I don't think he is any more or less a menace than your average back-row starter.
Re: we ALL hate dentists, but ....

The AMA's official position is that racing is entertainment, not sport (the same position taken by NASCAR), and that the larger the starting grid, the more entertaining the race. As a result, there are people on the track who probably shouldn't be there. I've seen the dentist race several times, and from what I saw, he is probably one of those people.
