Start with the simple things - stick in at least one new bulb and see if it lights. Definitely check the fuses, maybe use a voltmeter to compare conditions between those sockets and other working lights on the bike.

It's Japanese. The usual solution is to throw it away and buy a new one.
If you were deployed last year, you need a new bike this year. How many lives do you think you have? Far too few to ride and old klunker like that. Talk to your congressman and get the VA to set up a new-bikes-for-returning-vets program.
+1 - It's likely either a bulb or a fuse. Remember this is an older bike, and older electrics are weird sometimes - a fault in one location can cause problems elsewhere. I would check all the bulbs, to include turn signals, brake lights, running lights, and dash panel lighting as well as all fuses.

By the way, wise decision to at least check your bike over before you go out. I must've seen 10 bikes on the road this past weekend with headlights out.
