Just picked up my new/used 2002 Yamaha V Star 1100 last night. They rejetted the carbs because the prior owner changed the pipes to much louder ones, which I really like. Only thing is I'm used to my old Honda 750 and I don't think I ever smelled that while sitting in traffic. My new bike I can smell. I don't see any white smoke coming out of the pipes or anything but the smell of gas is pretty strong. Is that just the nature of the larger engine and louder pipes or is it a tuning thing?

Thanks.

Under no circumstances should you smell gasoline while the bike is running, regardless of pipes or jetting. Occasionally at startup, if you flood the carb you might get a whiff, but it would go away immediately. You may have a leaky or loose fuel hose, the mech may not have re-assembled the carb correctly, or a similar problem. I'd get right back to the shop and have it looked at soon, or you may be Ghost Rider III!

Letzee, they rejetted the carbz, and now...

..you smell gas when you are stopped. This is why Yamaha should stop using chipanzees as teks in their shops. This was proven by the Norton-Villers company back in the 70's. While chimps are cute, and have shown to be excellent supporting actors for ex-presidents, they suck when exposed to a roll-a-way full of Chinese copies of Snap-On tools.

Take that bike back to the shop, and advise the service manager to keep the chimps away from it!

Get rid of the loud pipes while you're at it, all they do is piss people off and make you look like a wanker

Amen, the jackazzes on my block that have to pull 4 screaming loud gears to reach 30 are too much to take. Even being a life long rider it still makes me want to throw a bag of tacks in the street when I hear them coming a mile away.

Well it isn't as loud as the Harley's in my neighborhood but it has some nut when you throttle it.

I talked to my shop guy. He said he'd take a look at it although he said that an 1100 v twin eats more gas than the 750 I had before it and it may just be a matter of getting used to it. He said he hears a lot of people complain about twin gas odors. Is he pulling my chain? Or...um...shaft? I'm still going to have it looked at just in case. My buddy smelled it and said he thinks it is just running rich.

Most likely when the previous owner installed the loud pipes he re-jetted, I'd say he went a little too rich. Japanese cruisers don't take as well to intake and exhaust mods as HD's do. They're usually a lot more precisely tuned from the factory so you can f'k them up pretty easy by playing around. Best to put it back stock, probably run great then

Sounds like you need a new "shop guy."

I've smelled gas on several occasion while riding with longride. However, the smell went away once he flew home.
You starting again ya wise guy? I'm still trying to get the finger dents off the Knuck grips that you put on em. I also put industrial strength glue on so you can't yank em off the bars!
