Other bios say Nicolas Cage (nee Coppola; grandson of Carmine, nephew of Francis, cousin of Sofia) took his stage name out of admiration for avant-garde composer John Cage.
I read that it was his mother's maiden name and he didn't want to use his real name (Coppola) because he wanted to "make it" on his own without the influence of the name.
Cage's first film role was in his uncle's film Rumble Fish in 1983. After being taunted by envious cast members who would refer to famous movie lines from his uncle's films, Cage decided to change his last name. He toyed with different last names and finally chose Cage in honor of comic-book superhero Luke Cage and the composer John Cage.
I think he would make a better Michael Parks/ Bronson character. But I'd rather see Michael Parks do an update of Then Came Bronson. Well...hang in there. Michael, you still alive buddy?
