thank you, thank you, thank you ....

thanks for so perfectly summing up my feelings on partisanship and politics. i have sent your words on to my father in the hopes he will someday regard me something other than a commie idiot. not sure yet whether i should share them with some biker friends, but maybe even they will find some enlightenment.

hope springs eternal ....

Re: No Shat Storm with this one...

In know -- kinda disapointing, ain't it? When I saw that Johnny had posted Part II, I was all geared up for another $hitstorm, and a good excuse to avoid real work while appearing to be busy at my computer for the next couple of days. Instead, we get this well-reasoned, articulate, non-inflamatory piece that won't set off anyone other than the most rabid among us!

Then, on top of that, I see your post, which says exactly what I wish I had written -- damn, I was really looking forward to being on the opposite side of another arguement with you.

I suppose that next, we will get a post from the Highwayman, stating that he took a test ride on the new CBR600RR, and that, while it is not his personal cup o' tea, it really is a nice bike, or a post from KPaul admitting that someone who prefers a Buell or Ducati to a Japanese bike just possibly might not be a complete idiot (oh wait, I think that may have already happened!)

>>Undershorts, swim trunks, bras & panties & dazed guests everywhere <<

First Johnny with the untold tale of the unnatural acts with the golf cart, now you with this teaser ----- when are you gonna let us in on the rest of this story, preferably with pictures?

Wow, great article!!! Not much in the way of motorcycles but it was good.

The big issue there is "not having to think". Damn shame we're like that.

You have to admit though, using the sarcastic description of the 80's conservative period was just asking for trouble. In a way, that stuff sets you up for the up late post porno surfing middle aged John Burke wannabes.

Man my hand is sore....

Once again JohnnyB tries to obfuscate his political leanings in an attempt to appear cosmopolitan, intelligent, and a stoic bastion of individuality. Ever notice that when Johnny's views on politics are attacked, he instinctively and cynically decries his opponet's argument as ad hominem and ill-informed? Apparently NOBODY can get a fix on Johnny. He's just too complicated, too smart. He exists on a higher plane than the rest of us.

Heaven forbid that Johnny would actually respond to the substance of an attack in an attempt to defend his purposefully veiled (but rather obvious) political views. Instead he says that Britian's socialized health care is swell (though almost any Briton on a waiting list to be hospitalized would disagree) and says something about having fun with friends. Such is the entire response to the claim that Johnny's a socialist. Again, he wouldn't want anyone to know what he actually thinks, why, they might have a differing, and (heaven forbid) more reasonable (or logical, or simply "better") viewpoint than he. That would make him vulnerable to attack by logic, something he patently avoids. Better to drop a few hints here and there (even better if it's an editorial endorsement of a second-hand opinion) and then claim that every criticism is spun from an immature, reactionary ignorance.

Please, dear reader, don't bother critisizing JohnnyB. I can assure you up front that you will have it wrong. You are an idiot, and JohnnyB is a sage of modern politik.

People, can we please keep are political thought to are self. I think I speak for most of us. At least the paying one anyway. I for one subcribed to M.O. for one reason only. To read about motorcycles. If you feel the need to write about your view on politics. Please do. But don't do it here. You will lose subsciber. Btw. If you are running out of thing to write about. Maybe you could do a review on one of the new dirtbike out there.

I know some of us ride more than just street and would welcome some thing new from that department. Keep up the good reviews.

Just because I love to disagree with you Abe, I have to respond.

I often disagree with JB and do find many of his responses to not be the most well thouhgt-out. I don't see how you can disagree with this one. It readily admits that both sides paint each other with inaccurate labels (read some of your responses to me and vice-versa) rather than thinking through the argument. It then says this is bad. Seemingly the same thing you are arguing for here.

Why should we respond when someone labels us as pinko-liberal, or a knee-jerk reactionary? How does this article say that one side is any better than another? Liberals dismiss conservatives just as often as conservatives dismiss liberals.

Labels are cognitive short-cuts. Most of us could stand to listen to the other side a little more. The problem is, we tend to surround ourselves with those that agree with us. This leads us to believe that most people agree with us and that all others must be a little off. We should seek out differing opinions if only to learn.

I disagree with JB a lot of the time, but this time he is simply discussing -- mostly in a correct way -- a classic logical fallacy. Why not just agree and wait for the inevitable article that has a little more with which to take issue? Or are you actually saying that labelling someone as "liberal," "socialist," "fascist," etc., is a legitimate form of argument? It seems obvious to me that he is pretty much joking about the whole socialist thing to point out 1) How ridiculous it is to try to win an arguement simply by throwing out a label and 2) That the US is far, far removed from true socialism.

I guess in certain world views, the word is the argument. I seem to recall your saying, "When I say "Liberal", I mean those people that adhere to the leftist emotional-political worldview that emerged in the sixties. As an actual movement, that has died, but it has been resurrected in the growth of many fragmented interests that share the same side of the political spectrum (animal right groups, most environmentalists, the NAACP, People for the American Way, the ACLU, abortion rights groups, NOW, homosexual/alternative lifestyle groups, anti-gun groups, etc. etc....)," in reference to me.

Without getting into particulars, your indication was that anyone who disagrees with you does so purely on emotion, not reason. You actually stated this directly -- is that not the same thing you are acusing JB of here?

Abe, please note that I respect your desire to study history and read the philosophy of the founding fathers. The only time you really bug me is when you suggest that yours is the only possible perspective and that those who disagree are idiots. You didn't really do that so much here, but I just love to argue with you.

I majored in Political Science at SDSU and love this kind of discussion and debate, however, when I click on Motorcycle Online I'm interested in reading motorcycle content. I can find this stuff elsewhere.

By the way JB, if you want to do some political stuff that is great if it sticks to issues relating to riders, e.g, land closings, EPA regs, etc.

Kumbaya, Sheidler!

Yes, I know my brother, Kumbaya.

But seriously, that kind of makes the point, no? You and I sometimes look at things differently, but I think that we have always respected the other's right to his point of view.

On this one we agree...but I think we're both content with either situation.
