I've got a better idea. Lets produce a show where we take choppers and turn them into actual, ridable, dependable, usable motorcycles. I've even thought of a name; "Straight eye for the biker guy"?

It's great news however that several fun jobs are being created. Totally useless machines however. P.T. Barnum said it best, didn't he?

How long will wannabe outlaw bikers keep buying custom cruisers? As long as the Discovery channel (now known as "The Chopper Channel") keeps airing shows like American Chopper and the Biker Build-Off.

The popular media has convinced a whole generation of men in their mid-life crisis with entirely too much disposable income that their misable, middle-class life just won't be complete until they buy a chopper. Even if they've never ridden a bike before. It used to be that these guys would either have an affair or buy a Porsche. I constantly see guys riding shiny new customs, wearing brand new riding gear, who obviously don't know how to ride. Ever hear of the MSF?

Just this past year I've begun to see a lot of these custom bikes sitting on front lawns with "For Sale" signs on them. There is a lot of them on eBay too. And not surprisingly, they sit on that lawn for a long time. Their owners sell them when they realize that they've been sold a over-priced, unrelable, unridable piece of driveway jewelery. And they're not the babe-magnet they were led to believe they were. Hey! The bike is just the ice-breaker, you have to have a personality to carry the conversation.

A small company making one-of customs might make it, but when they go main stream like Excelsior-Henderson or Indian, they'll fail because the market just isn't there. How many custom clone companies have come and gone (and come again)? Titan, Ultra, Indian, E-H, Confederate, and others. The list gets longer every year.

Hardbikes? Custom Choppers? Posercycles! Here in south central Wisconsin, where Harley is god, you see alot of these guys. They look at me in my helmet and full gear on my K1200RS (soon to be a K1200S) and sneer. I'm no real biker. Real bikers don't need no helmets. They're the badass biker dudes. You can tell by the black leather and the do-rag.

Of course they ride 2000 painful miles a year, and I ride 20,000. Who's the real "biker"? I used to dread getting caught behind mini-vans. Now it's herds of posers on chromed up HD's and customs that hold me up on my favorite roads......

I keep hoping this fad will end.

Hey, anybody actually check out Hardbikes on their web site. They build choppers but they also build a lot of low slung custom styles too. When I called them up they explained they just as soon build a pro-street over a chopper, it is up to the customer. It is all about you making the choice which I think all these other companies forgot about. Check out their 300 Neo-Bobber. It is an old school style bike with a little stretch and a suspension and they tell me they can build it to match my favorite riding position. I think these guys might be on to something, it’s called listening to the customer.
