Tank slappers don't affect .....THM.... because the only time his HD goes 90+ is in his dreams or on his trailer, tank slappers at true posing speed of 30~40 mph are rare, Anyway I thought the tank slapper thing was with handlebar mounted fairings like on the FLH series, IE; too much weight on the bars, I'd never heard about wheel mis-alignment, seems like a steering damper would solve it either way, Truth be told, a pud-slapper like ....THM..... doing a tank-slapper is kinda funny, ,,,, Manly arm fringes flying.... Manly boots flying off the pegs....eyes blazing with faith in his road side assistance warranty.....

Bandit oil consumption is the problem, I believe. Don't know about Carb problems except the usual EPA mandated way-too-lean-save-the-enviroment stock settings, I got bit by the VFR regulator bug twice on my '97, no fun, and no help from Honda either. I've got to respect Buell for stepping up with the shock re-call, It's like pulling teeth to get any of the other factorys to admit they ****ed up.

Well that stinks, I hadn't heard of that one yet, my Bandit's got about 22k on it now, so I'm good for another year or two, I guess if that problem shows up I'll have to try 'n find a set of newer used stockers or something, so far my '01 has run like a champ, no smoke or jetting issues at all, it ran a little rough on the way to work this mourning, but it was 33 and thick fog, so the throats were probably icing up till the engine got warm.

I put about 60k mi.'s on my STOCK amf 74" shovelhead FLHP with only one front cyl. exhaust valve burning and needing replacement, I think it cost me about $50 bucks to get the valve seat re-ground and a new valve, other than that it was reliable as a brick, I bought it in '85 for $4500 off the WSP auction, and sold it in '89 for $4000, all it cost me was tires and chains, I think if you buy them stock and leave them stock they run forever, The only things that ever broke on my scratch built 80" amf shovelhead chopper was the aftermarket crap I put on there, once I replaced all that with stock HD parts it held up pretty well too, You can look at any Aisian or European bike and find problem areas as well. BMW diode boards? early Suzuki GS alternators? VFR regulators, to name a few. from all the 25 or so bikes I've owned the Harley's were no worse than any other in terms of reliability.

I'm planning on keeping mine, It really is one of the best I've owned, I'll probably buy a road glide in 5 years to celebrate turning 50, plus my daughters will be almost grown so I can make some road trips again, but I'll keep the Bandit for a play bike.

We pulled some feed pump bearings last week that had cooked, about the only thing left was the inner and outer cages, 7 out of 10 ball bearings and a bunch of gritty grease LOL, these run at a constant 3450 rpm and 220 degrees, when they go you hear them start to grind, if you take them out right then they don't look any different, but leave 'em in an hour or two and they're greasy powder. Maybe with a bike engine that stops and starts you could see deformaties or magna-flux them or something, if you caught them at the right time.

Re: VFR Alternator?

It's usually not the alternator, it's the voltage regulator/rectifier that overheats and quits, it's a 5 minute job to fix, two bolts, one plug and $80 bucks later and your on your way, it's just the idea that you should have to put up with it in the first place. Honda has known about this for years and still no better unit comes along. Plan on $80 every 20k miles or so and your set.

Re: Defending Corvettes

Your RIGHT Sean, according to the Edmunds.com web site the 350Z performance version is in fact 3 lbs heavier than the Corvette, Even more surprising given the larger engine and overall dimensions of the Corvette, Sadly, when you're as Idiotic as I am, you're focus has always been motorcycles

Why, thats absurd, Kpaul is an engineer, with other engineers working under him [eeew], He's a legend in his own mind, out-standing in his field! He predicted the death of V-twins in racing, and by-golly Ducati builds a V-4 GP bike! pretty soon Hardley-Ableson will be building inline fours that look suspisously like ZX6 engine's, just ask him!
