just wear a helmet.

Re: Pic

Great, trauma care from someone who can't even spell . . . Just wear your helmet, because arguing that riding without a helmet is safe, is pointless.
Re: GRRRRR....

"Ok, let's suppose you DON'T go around hitting people with your car. Wouldn't you and I both be better off if you paid some attention to where you were driving?"

What kind of logic is that? Accidents happen, bud, and car drivers suck everywhere. If you get into an accident and get killed, who gives a rat's ass who's fault it was. You're dead. In a driving utopia where mistakes did not happen, we wouldn't need bumpers, seat belts, or even good brakes. Until then there is no smart way to argue not to wear a helmet.
Re: A few words from some prominent people.....

Talk about out-of-context. I am pretty sure that Franklin had slighly more important things than your childish need to ride without a helmet, on his mind at the time.
Now THAT's a classic! I promise to use it, if you don't mind . . .
Re: GRRRRR....

Hello? I DID read the original post. The fact that you can not differentiate between specific examples, and an underlying point, does not mean that my comprehension skills need work. I understand his point and yours.

My point was that while his reason for helmet laws may have been "selfish" or even flat out wrong, it just doesn't matter if you go and get killed over something as dumb as not wearing a helmet. I don't buy the shooting analogy either, because while auto accidents are an inescapable real possibility for everyone every day, relatively few people get shot. I also don't think his post meant that he wanted to hit you, but that in the event that you do get hit, it would be better for everyone if you had a lid on your noggin.

ps - I wear better gear than you (I'm not trying to start a pissing contest, congrats on your gear) . . . but when I used to ride on the street daily I also used to wear similar protection that you do now.

Whatever, maybe we are getting off topic. I understand what you're saying. As a matter of fact I also do not like that helmet laws, seat belt laws, warning labels on everything we buy, etc. have to exist. But since people prove themselves to be unable to act responsibly (prpoer insurance, common sense care) without coercion from the government, this debate will always be with us.

Re: GRRRRR....

I agree with you completely. I guess I just get sucked into this argument when all of the guys that don't want to wear helmets start arguing that it's not really less safe than wearing a helmet. If people want to go without helmets because "you can", fine. But you can't give me a good reason not to wear a helmet.

Like you said, these laws will never affect me, except to cause me to point out the idiots riding around damaging their hearing, getting cracked in the face by dragonflies, and risking grinding all the skin off their heads for no good reason. Does it really enhance the experience of riding that much? I think it takes away from it.
Re: Pic

OK, now we can talk about the difference between plain misspelling and typos . . .

Relax, I was just being a smart-ass. I was only kidding and I apologize.
Re: A few words from some prominent people.....

I agree 100%. I am for absolutely as much personal freedom as people will be responsible with. Making laws like these is a ridiculous waste of time, but so are the legal disclaimers that anything a consumer ever comes in contact with, has. The problem, as I see it, is that people aren't taking responsibility for themselves, in general. Why? Because the legal system does not require it of them. This is why I think there are limits to our "freedoms" that even good old Ben might agree with. Maybe Ben wouldn't want helmet laws specifically, I just feel like it trivializes his ideas to use them for this cause.

Personally, I don't really even want these laws on the books either, but it pisses me off to hear everyone trying to rationalize the reasons not to wear a helmet. In my opinion, there are no good reasons, as it detracts from the riding experience on many levels, including; the added unnecessary risk to my face and skull, the damage to my hearing, and projectiles impacting my face at high speed.

Re: As a former BMXer...

To add: You're right, most BMXers only wear helmets when racing or riding ramps. Nobody wears them to ride dirt, street, or flat . As far as mtb'ers go, if I rode a bike clipped-in, leaning way the hell over the front of the bars, with little discernible bike control skill, it probably wouldn't take long for me to figure out that I need a helmet, either : )
