I helped a buddy of mine in High School (at Clark AB in the Philippines) rebuild a '63 Ford wagon his Dad had dumped on him. It was in great shape and the engine ran fine, but it had lunched the tranny.
We used the Chilton manual, very particular in our detail and cleanliness. When we put it back together, it ran! Unfortunately, it had one speed in "F", and three in "R"! It'd haul @ss backwards, lemme tell ya!
We must have torn that tranny apart five times. Never did figure out WTF we did wrong.
His Dad took it back, and paid a local shop to put a rebuilt unit in.
Then there's the time (also in the P.I.) my Dad bought a '62 Buick Special, and found out- the next morning when he went to back out of the carport- that it had no reverse. He drove it like that for quite awhile.
The real story is how he decided a Chevy 283 and PowerGlide transmission "would fit right in" that Buick! We spent a lot of time at the Auto Hobby Shop...
