Yes, there was a massive glut of Japanese bikes in the early 80's. I remember seeing 1981 GS1000s being offered for $1999 in 1984 as an example, as I recall. They sold for about $3500 new in '81.
That's from memory. Maybe someone still has an old mag from that era that you could check.
