I was the rider

See article SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Nation -- Watergate figure Jeb Magruder hospitalized after car crash in Ohio.

I was the rider he hit. I was in the 2nd lane from the right on Rt 315 where it is a 4 lane highway. I was going about 60 mph and concentrating on the merging traffic ahead of me. I felt a tremendous push from behind and the bike rolled on to its right side. I hit the pavement with my helmet and right arm. Somehow he didn't run me over. When if finally stopped tumbling I was in the middle of the highway and managed to get up and run to the shoulder. The guy didn't stop, but plowed into a truck two exits later. According to witnesses he was going 80-90 and just cut across three lanes of traffic as he hit me. The EMS guys told me later that after he was extracted from the car he was unaware he hit a motorcycle. I have some bad bruises and road rash where the gear wore through, but nothing broke. I owe my life to an Arai helmet, armored Cortech jacket, First Gear gloves, and Oxtar boots. I wish I had my Aerostitch on or other motorcycle pants. Khakis don't cut it.

Wow! It sounds like you got lucky.

60 on the highway.
You got hit by a car.
You stop tumbling and ended in the middle of the highway.

And you only got some bruises?! That's some good gear you got (and some mighty fine luck). I would have thought at least a broken ankle or wrist.

Did the [email protected] have insurance? I'm kind of thinking the bike might be declared "totaled". So what happens now?

New bike?

Good to hear you were able to walk away with only some bruising.

I think I used up all my luck, won't be going to Vegas any time soon.

My bike was BMW R1200GS with only 2500 mi on the odometer. I haven't seen it yet. It will get towed from the impound lot to the dealer later today or tomorrow. The guy has insurance (more good luck) but I don't know what will happen or how long it will all take to get this sorted out. The driver is still in the hospital. I need to see a physical therapist for my neck wrist and knee, but nothing broke.
Hey, at least you got clipped by someone famous!!

No really glad you got away with bumps and bruises, good gear saves the day once again. I had a similar experiance 2 years ago, I got sideswiped in a multicar freeway pile up caused by some young assholes street racing in a Civic. After doing the tumbles and sliding for a few dozen yards I got up and walked away with a sore back, a totaled bike and a shredded JR Ballistic 4.0 jacket. We both really lucked out bud, no getting around it.
Give thanks to the luck ghod...

..you be one lucky son-of-a-gun. Hope you didn't use it all up. Like a cat's 9 lives.

My luck ran out in December of last year, when some a hole in an SUV tried to make me a into hood ornament.

I didn't fare so well.
Glad you survived! And three words for ya: Leather, leather, leather!! Perforated if you must.
Sorry to hear you got hurt. I hope you recover well.
You are right. There really isn't a substitute that is as good. Just hard to commute to work in.
True. I used an Aerostich suit when I needed that sort of commute protection. Perhaps you could consider something similar. Khaki doesn't cut it.
I own one, but it wasn't doing me any good in the closet. I also own an Alpinstar leather suit for the track. I guess it was just such a nice warm day I wanted to be comfortable. I'd gladly trade a little sweat for less road rash right now. Again, another lesson learned.

I am also glad I didn't use an open face helmet looking at the chin bar.
Glad to hear you're (mostly) ok!
And this guy didn't get charged with anything? How about wreckless driving, public endangerment, leaving the scene? How stoned do you gotta be to not know that you punted a motorcycle on the expressway?

He worked for Nixon. Denying illegal actions would probably be listed as a hobby on his resume.

"Richard Nixon has never been one of my favorite people anyway. For years I've regarded his existence as a monument to all the rancid genes and broken chromosones that corrupt the possibilities of the American Dream; he was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena and the style of a poison toad.

The Nixon I remembered was absolutely humorless; I couldn't imagine him laughing at anything except maybe a paraplegic who wanted to vote Democratic but couldn't quite reach the lever on the voting machine."

They have charged him with hit and skip as well as reckless endangerment. They won't arrest him until he is discharged from the hospital (otherwise the state pays the bill). Other charges may follow once the prosecutor gets hold of the case. I will be very interested in his prior DUIs being pled down. He is also an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church. I'd personally like an apology for almost killing me. The difference between him facing another DUI vs. vehicular manslaughter is my wearing a helmet and getting very lucky with oncoming traffic. Also, now that I think about the accident, the large metal panniers may have prevented me from getting caught under the bike and/or the bike sliding under his car.

I thought amnesia about illegal actions was taken to t new level by Slick Willie. Go read what Hunter S. said about Clinton. ;-)
Not to defend Nixon....

... but Hunter's opinion of Nixon sounds suspiciously like he's confessing his own character faults.
Hard to believe you were hit by a drunk Presbyterian Minister Watergate co-conspirator! Sounds like a dime novel. So glad you made it through with all your hard bits intact. It's a good reminder to wear our armour head to toe. Can't blame you though, I've put my motorcycle pants in the bags on a hot day before, will try to resist that next time now.
Dame republicans they never practice what they preach!
Maybe I can write a book?
See, what I do when the weathers hot is I wear shorts to work with my Aerostitch jacket and pants and my dandy new Combat Touring boots. Then I just change into my work boots and I'm comfy all day, riding to and from work and at work as well. I don't have to deal with the public at all and who's going to laugh at a 300 + lb biker in cargo shorts and steel toe boots anyway...

Best of both worlds, LOL
