OK Here is my rant, bought a 1999 Buell X1 Lightning Limited Production, new.
In less than 11,000 miles I have had to replace the muffler 4x due to the weld at the muffler "elbow" failing. Buell customer service says they are not aware of this part being a problem. Odd since I met Eric Buell @ 1999 Buell Rally @ Taoes N.M and several other riders also pointed out the problem.
I have also had the rocker box gaskets replaced due to leaking. So far these two problems are not that big a deal.

This spring as I was looking forward to a new riding season, while getting ready to ride, X1 was leaking fuel at the fuel line/fuel filter connection. Ok, rotate the rubber fuel line a bit on the filter and leak stopped. Ok now lets start and go ride. Crank crank crank start sputter cough stall, crank crank crank start run stall, crank crank start run stall. Crank crank crank crank nothing. Engine cranks, no spark. Fk it, park it and take out Harley and go ride. This fall had the Buell X1 towed to a dealership, I figured it was either a bad cam sensor, bad ign coil, or ECM (I had replaced the ECM with a used one and had no spark yet, so had it towed). I figured this will be a several hundred$$ repair at the worst. No such luck. The gear that drives the oil pump lost several teeth and pieces of it went throughout the engine while trying to start. Now the engine is scored and is toast. I was told that if I were at freeway speed when this happened, the engine likely would have grenaded. All in less than 15,000 miles !!!!! This X1 was very well maintained, and is a monumental disappointment. The cost of engine repair or replacement will be near the current value of the bike. This was a waste of hard earned money purchasing this bike !!!!!!
It was fun to ride when it did run. Buell American Motorcycles???? Is this usual for a Buell ???

Wow. mscuddy has similar bad luck with his.

I have a 2003 XB9S. Completely different engine and bike. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
When you say "completely different engine," what do you mean? We didn't sell Buells at the HD shop I worked in, so I really don't know them that well. I thought all pre-1125 Buells were based on the XL engine, with minor variances in displacement etc. Aside from the Blast, which I think is a XL engine missing a cylinder?

My ridin' buddy's XB9R has held up pretty well as far as I know. He rides the snot out of it and other than the above mentioned rear wheel bias it's a pretty decent bike.

I had a similar problem with a 97 Buell. From what I understand the XB series has been more reliable. Bummer.

X1 used mostly stock HD Sportster components. XBs used a design based on HD engines, but just about every part was changed.

I have several friends who ride XBs locally, and none have had engine or transmission problems. A few have had belt problems, however. One friend has broken two belts on his XB12R.

Your friend breaking belts, has he been riding off road? Or on gravel/dirt roads. If he gets a stone or other debris between the belt and pulley, kafooey goes the belt.

My XB9SX had 5000 miles on it before I got centerpunched and the bike ruined. At 2000 miles it started fouling pulgs, and at 4000 miles it needed new cylinders fore and aft. I would not buy another one if I had the chance. Looked neat though...

Is every buell a Pos? Yes and no.

I've owned my 1998 White Lightnig since 2005. I purchased it for 3700$
I have dumped about 3000$ into it for maintenance and needed aftermarket upgrades to keep it rolling. So far the front forks have blown seals 3 times, rear shock blew out 3 times, 1 titanium race header granaded and the stock pipe stupid brackets too many times to list, 2 mufflers, 1fell off and 1 literaly exploded, 2 ignition modules, 1 camposition sensor, and many light bulbs.
Sounds bad, not reliable... It was frusterating. Parts arn't cheap and Harley Davidson dealerships don't know a thing about buells. But after making the bike the way buell should have from the factory, it is by far the most serious track and drag Muscle bike I have ridden. The term street bike is an understatement. This bike is a full race bike and rides accordingly. Intake, carb, ignition, exhaust, and an overbore with 10.5:1 compression. 115HP, 115 LBS! 1st to 100mph every time. A real Monster Street Fighter can live with TLC!

I get both sides of the coin but most of them with XB's seem to be pretty reliable. Knew of a couple people that had reaccuring problems that warranty took care of no big deal. Good luck though!

No all Buells are not POS's: my M2 Buell (2000) has been modified for drag racing. Bottom end, tranny, oil pump, fuel tank and chassis are stock; compression has been raised to 12.5:1 and belt drive binned in favor of 530 sprockets and chain and slicks fore and aft. The stock starter can turn it over and start it with the aid of compresion releases. Can, and has run 10.5 in the quarter @115 mph.

I don't consider that as a POS, will put it back on the street after lowering the compression and new tires come spring.:)
