These workers build pride into every motorcycle Harley sells and they deserve a fair contract that reflects the success they helped create," said Buffenbarger. "Instead, this company’s management is risking a successful 26-year partnership for a few cents more in profits. It’s incredibly stupid and shortsighted."

The statement above is from a Union Rep involved in the contract talks.

This is an INCREDIBLY arrogant statement from a SHORTSIGHTED individual. HD is trying to stop short the problems that are happening to other major manufacturers and what they get is a bunch of panty-waste cry babies that think that things should be given to them FREE. Why do they think that the time they put into a job is worth more money than my time? They provide a labor force- one that can be replaced by the way.The "skilled" part of this labor is not nearly as technical as the engineers that design the product. Suck it up you whiners! Your job may depend on it.

Not until they move their production overseas where they can build more for less.

But if the unions don't keep the free health care and high pay, they won't be able to afford the very product they manufacture! Next thing you know, only doctors and lawyers will be able to afford Harleys.

If unions cleaned up their acts I'd have more sympathy for them. After all the union movement was vital in reigning the excesses of mangament in the 19th and early 20th centuries. But today's unions tolerate widespread incompetence and cronyism in their ranks. Theft of company property is widespread. Heck, I know guys who belonged to the mineworkers at Kennecott who have complete sets of Snap-on tools in their garages that they looted from Kennecott.

I used to belong to the printer's union in Kalif and learned that in return for my dues I got absolutely nothing. No representation, no benefits, no protection from firing or layoffs, absolutely nothing but a hole in my paycheck. What a joke.

Unions are in serious trouble. If you seperate out the public employees unions you discover that union membership is at an all time low and getting worse. If unions took serious action to ensure competence and industriousness from their members you'd see management welcoming union workers instead of trying to find ways to avoid them.

The problem with this situation is, the union's got 'em by the short hairs, because Harley trades so heavily on its "made in America" reputation. If I were in the market for an American car, I would much prefer one built by robots than Johnny-punchclock union s*****. But if Harley outsourced to another country or relied more heavily on automation, they'd be done for.

Unions in today's society is very much like Socialism. Redistribution of wealth is what it is. Union don't believe in individualism. Collective thinking is the only way for Unions. Unions memberships are so low because the "need" for them has changed in the last 30 yrs. Right- Johnny?

"The union voted Wednesday to authorize a strike after rejecting the company’s contract offer, which would have reduced pay rates for new hires, required employees to pay part of their health insurance premiums and forced pension concessions..."
