K100 not starting

I just got my bike back after a 3 1/2 month of seperation (not my fault) and days after I got it she will not start. I've pulled plugs and checked various this and thats. So, here's the question: With a little over 40k on the clock can the Fuel Pump (mounted in the tank) suddenly go bad? I am picking up a new fuel filter today, but it's awfully odd that I road the bike 45 miles from the paint shop, parked it for 2 days and now it won't start. The starter turns like it should and the choke (idle advance- it's fuel injected) is operating, but NO crankie. Who's got a K bike and can tell me if I'm on the right path. I am not a mechanic- I just have limited mechanical aptitude. HELP!

You are correct Sir, for $2000 and a chance to advance to the Bonus Round. I made esentially the same comment on StromTroopers...I said "top boxes" scream milk crate on a scooter to me, and I'd never put one on my bike. Man, those guys really like top boxes.

I actually hadn't considered the chain and sprocket as a cool customizing opportunity. Fairly cheap, visible, won't see it on every other bike. Thanks!
BTW: not to get this thread back on track or anything, but Kirk: how's the bike running? Gotta feel great getting back on it after that involuntary 6 week grounding!
Kinda neat, Sprocket Specialists has a number of different colored anodized alloy sprockets, I'm sure they have a nice blue....blue bike- black wheels- blue sprocket- gold chain it's one of those subtle things that you look at and say "Oh cool"...instead of just chroming the sh*t out of everything.

Ditto on the trunk, handy as can be but gad.......plus you kick the SOB everytime you get on the bike..

It was the weirdest [email protected] thing. I took it out Friday for a 15 min spin and all was fine. On Monday I took the morning off and hit the road 3 hrs- not a glitch. I am dumbfounded. I've never had a bike not start for days then suddenly fire and ride like nothing was ever wrong. I did manage to change the fuel filter (more for peace of mind) but that was uneventful. Otherwise, things are great with the K bike. Thanks you guys for all you do to keep the levity right.

I'd bet the $190 I need for my insurance policy that there is some "safety" gizmo in the FI system that cuts off the fuel. Maybe a vacuum operated valve or something. Once you started cranking it again, you got it primed and it started. It won't happen again I'm sure.
Yep- I think it was left over ghost of the tragic "tip over". Which was more of a fall since it was actually on the mechanics table when it hit the deck. Just makes me appreciate it that much more. BTW- highs in the middle 70s haven't hurt my mood. I have to work a 2nd job today and will be gladly riding over rather than driving.

That is obscene. We're sweltering down here...80's.
I've been so busy with business for the last 6 months or so that I had not noticed that the Acemeister had added a K-Whiner - aka Slush-head - to the stable.

Ahh, the Whiner - many an MOA type has put literally squintillions of miles on the nearly indestructible flying brick.

If I were you, I'd check out BMW Sport Touring.com or join the MOA and look at their forums. I - like Justin Wilson - absolutely gaaarrrroooonnnnntttteeee that you'll find several folks who have tracked down and solved exactly the same intermittent situation that you experienced and are likely to experience again.

K-Whiners not as likely to toast a rear end as the newer bikes either.

... have some good data on how to care for the older rear ends to avoid the dreaded THUNK. The problems with the new ones will probably be solved soon. It mainly seems to affect the heavier bikes. The key for now seems to be inspecting the rear end oil frequently for evidence of metal shavings from the bearings. The new hubs don't have a drain plug so they are difficult to check.
