HD workes need to take field

I agree 40% more is quite a difference. No need to offshore I think some unemployed UAM and IAM (aerospace) workers would love to get those jobs These HD worker folks need to get out more. Car companies and Aerospace companies are shutting down entire factories that made parts and subassemblies. Because they can outsource it far cheaper than pay the union wage. All that is done here is final assembly.... I think the average aerospace worker has a higher and more diverse skill set. as well .Heck Harley should put in an add in the Seattle times..Lots of folks that used to work in factories here working at Walmart. Hardly anyone has totally company paid health care anymore or guranteed raises for the next 3 years. And the trend is away from pensions to larger contributions to 401K it's better in the long term for the company i.e. financial obligations in bad times are far less.

They don't have to.. Help Wa

With a 40% differential they don't have to offshore Just hire replacement workers. Heck they could probably could hire them for 20% less.. as justify by saying they aren't trained or skilled yet. Like said below put an ad int Detroit, Seattle, or Long Beach papers.
Wanted ex-auto or ex-aerospace factory workers, excellent pay, paid medical, 401K, nice small town living.

Re: They don't have to.. Hel

Good to hear you guys looking at long run and the big picture. My wifes side of the family is all union IAM well it used to be.. Out of 6 only one still has a job. The rest of the work was outsourced. They would love to have their jobs back.. I suspect if Harley put an ad in the newspaper lots of ex IAM would apply and go to PA to work for a great company like Harley.

Yep you nailed (sorry I couldn't say it any other way)... My wifes relatives (union IAM with years with the company) were all making more than I was when I started out.

Maybe but what about?

There are some exceptions to the rule. Southwest Airlines and the Japanese automakers who have plants and union folks here. So I think you may be over generalizing (something I know a lot about).. There is a management component to some of those failures. Short-term profits and stock price over long term sustained growth is big one that American management has problems with. The political climate that state has towards business is key.. Republicans aren't always sympathetic to business. Sometimes they won't make the necessary investment in infrastructure to keep a business in their state i.e. they will give tax cuts instead of build roads to relieve congestion.. This is what has happened in WA state..

Re: Local View of Harley Str

I was in a non-union store approached by UFCW when I was in high school.. I voted for the union but I was on the losing side. The Safeway across the street was union which keep the wage scale up for us but still below the S boys. It was great job for a high school kid I started at min wage but got raises quickly.. At the time, the old-timers did pretty good for being only high school grads. I don't think they do as well now in comparison. Walmart and Kmart stores moved in with grocery depts.. Those stores also took out the local Hardware Stores, Clothing Stores, Drug stores.. Downtown is a shell of its former self. The only businesses left are bars, restaurants, jewelry stores, insurance agents, lawyers etc.

"As far as the 787, what hasn't been mentioned is the role foreign govt. played. "if we don't get a piece of the action (mfg) we ain't buying." Actually I think I did talk about that in another thread. Yes there is a certain amount of what is called offset usually involving state owned airlines (India, China, Russia, etc.) That offset should diminish as more foreign airlines become private owned (by stock holders not governments). Once a airline goes into the private sector cost of the airplane is the major focus. You can't explain all of the outsourcing on offset. Look at the list of suppliers and see if they have state ran airline in their country. You might be surprised to see what you come up with. Its a global economy now and most of us are now competing globally..
