Here it is, read it and weep. The most outrageous and irrational anti-motorcycle "law" that's come down the pike for many years. If you recall, this is the a-hole who initially wanted to sieze your bike and throw you in jail for speeding. The Legislature toned it down slightly so it wasn't so brazenly discriminatory. This weekend Lopez went out on patrol to enjoy the results of his asinine escalation of the cops vs. rider war. How's this little gem grab you: "If the plate is mounted improperly, officers can fine the rider $1,000."

Thanks to the AMA for at least trying to tone this ******* down. AMA and ABATE both fought this. If you aren't a member of AMA, join. They aren't perfect, but they are our advocates.

You should have seen the law in it's original form! Some of the stuff that the AMA and ABATE were able to get removed included:

Automatic forfiture of your motorcycle upon arrest (NOT conviction), using the same law they use to take homes, boats and cars from drug smugglers. There are several hundred people suing the State of FL to get their property back after their arrests were either thrown out or they were acquitted.

Automatic arrest: no officer discretion, you go to jail. Of course, if it's the weekend, or your broke or don't have someone to bail you out, you'll be there a while.

Loss of motorcycle endorsement for life on the 2ond offense.

The first couple of "features" were tossed because even though the Legislature wanted to whip this on the riders, they knew it wouldn't hold up unless they applied it to cagers. And of course, the cager community would fight it. The third item was tossed because the only way to make it non-discriminatory was to take driving priviledges as well.

THis would be a great time for government to be embracing and supporting motorcycling. Instead, we get this ****less wonder Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami (I put his full name/title in. I"m hoping his staff does web searches and will find my comments. Lopez, you are a slimy waste of meat, wish you were in my voting district) promoting this crap.

In a previous story, it was revealed that the Lopiss-****era family had been terrorized by a gang of evil stunters who did wheelies within clear sight of his helpless children. Ya know, Mr. Lopez, considering the crime and drug rate y'all have down in Miami-Dade, I think your priorities are as ****ed up as your traffic law.

Ken, these aren't the kind of concessions we have to make to live in a larger society are they? If they are, I'm extremely disappointed!

It isn't easy, is it? Especially since you can't pack up the old Conestoga wagon and get the hell out of town anymore...it's just another town with the next set of concessions to be made down the road.

Space! Motorcyles in space! That's the answer!

You make some good points there Zawa. In fact, the TSA is testing a bracelet right now that all airline passengers may be required to wear. It allows them to "Taze" anyone remotely from a control station or by using a laser pointer.

I'll stick by my comment that we have to make concessions to live in a larger society. Unless you're on a remote island living in isolation, you already have. You're using the highways and agreeing (in theory anyway) to drive on the right side of the road. Maybe your kid is in school and you bring him there on time.

Having said that, I have to agree, even as a "Liberal Democrat," that we've gone further than we should in invading personal liberties needlessly. I'm ok with laws preventing people from pouring toxic waste in my drinking water supply, but I'm not ok with anyone telling me I can't pour or inhale toxins down my throat if I wish.

The great thing about America was that we traditionally had a set of checks and balances that kept things under control; it was unlike anything else before or since. Now I think that system has been greatly dilluted by an Executive Branch that has far too much power. Locally, as the urban areas grow more crowded and resources and space shrink, dumbasses like Lopez get the support they need for their excessive laws.

Ken, there is a huge difference between making a law to prevent people from hurting other people, and making a law to prevent me from hurting myself. I think the concessions we REALLY have to make are ones that say people can get hurt or killed in a free society without the need for laws to try to prevent every occurrence. Remember, if it only save one life........
