KPaul the Great Motorcycle Prophet makes a prediction.
The FZ-6looks like a great concept on paper and it was going to validate a prediction I have. I like the looks and the half fairing. Too bad the execution was bad One could see manufacturers developing a family of bikes based on the same 600 ccc engine:
[*]A hard core sport bike
[*]A softer sport tourer, lower pegs, higher bars, larger fairing
[*]A half faired standard
[*]A naked standard
Currently, manufacturers hang on to there old supersports for the softer sport tourers Katana and Yamaha FJ600 come to mind. If I was a bike maker it seems one could dramatically reduce the cost of parts, maintenance etc. by going to a family based on a same engine. A 1000cc family could be built in the same way.
Longride will probably tell me its been done before. Buz will say I need V-Twin to build a family like the SV650 and SV650S.

Yes, Jexter you are correct. Even though the 599 is $7000 it only has 86.4 hp. Versus my $7800 Ninjas 98hp. So using the great $$$/Hp ratio Jexter is correct. Almost identical. Interesting point Jexter.

I do wonder how the Z750 would have done in this comparo. Too bad that Kawi USA decided to not import it. Maybe next year?

I am lusting for a yellow Daytona (the big one), cause have my wife convinced that the Ninja is too small for me now. Just worried about reliablity since if I got it would have to last me awhile. Is yours doing OK. How about the dealer???

I really enjoy MO reviews and wish you guys could find a way to do more.
In the past year and a half I've gone from a Bandit 1200 to a ZR7S to a recently-purchased YZF600R. After reading your latest shootout...I'm glad I bought the 600R. I think it's a shame that Yamaha chose to build a budget bike from the ground up and settle for the compromise that is the FZ6 rather than make a few modifications to the excellent 600R platform. I think a Yamaha version of Triumph's Sprint RS package based on the 600R platform would be unbeatable.
I've wanted a SV650 for some time but fit has always been an issue for me (36" inseam). Now that Suzuki's finally lowered the pegs I may be tempted if my 600R experience disappoints.

CBR600-RR: Hardcore supersport
CBR600-F4i: Supersport with better ergonomics
Hornet (faired): 1/2 faired standard
Hornet (unfaired): unfaired standard
CB600: 1/2 faired 600cc tourer, complete with available ABS
Different GENERATIONS of the same engine/family to do the different roles. Of course, the 1/2 faired horent and the cB600 are europe, not US.

I do believe the bike you're talking about was sold as the Fazer 600S in Europe. It was just replaced by the Fz-6 (something about EU emissions.) If you pick up any of the British mags they're still lamenting the loss of the old bike. Reviews of the old Fazer sounded a lot like the MO review of the 599, a "greater than the sum of its parts" sort of thing.

You make a great point, However, I guess I thought exact same engine, which I think is true with the Yamaha FZ and R6. But maybe that explains why Honda is number one huh. I just don't get the Suzuki GSXR-600 vs Katana thing. The Katana has a oil/air cooled engine for God's sake.

I won't bash the sportster, but the 883 should have been the motorcycle that was included in this comparo. How can you call a 1200 cc motorcycle a middleweight? Maybe if you title the article "Middle Power" it would be more appropriate.
All in all, very good story and I would really like to take a Honda 599 out for a spin. It sounds like a great bike.
