Say what you will about our Mexicans, but remember this:

WE are the Motherland of Pollo Tropical, freshly charred hormone-laden chicken, cleavered into submission before your very eyes by a sweating man of colour, and served with Arrows, Pan, and Fryjoles *******.

and there it is, always with the black beans... Are Pinto's illegal in South Florida?
Not if they've had the gas tank recall performed.

I knew when I posted a ford ref was coming. Ironically I believe the pinto was going to be the first production car with a tank liner, but that was axed right before production. Ooops...
I was heavily influenced by the Pinto fiasco. I was a Junior in High School when a friend was badly burned in his Pinto.

Ford's own testing showed that if you hit a Pinto from behind, the doors would jam shut. The differential bolts would penetrate the gas tank, rupturing it and sparking an explosion. At the same time, the rear floor would open up, making a duct for the flaming gasoline to blow forward into the passenger compartment. Basically the car became a self-sealing Toast -R- Oven for its passengers.

About a year later, I read a news expose about how Ford had made a deliberate decision to remove a $13 part from production Pintos. Their actuarials had calculated the cost of the lawsuits they knew would come from the families people who were burned to death in the cars, and compared it to the cost of the $13 part installed in the several million Pintos they planned to sell. The cost of the part was more than the cost of the lawsuits, so they decided to leave it out.

Making an error in design, even a grossly stupid one, is understandable. But knowing full well that your product had an easily correctable, deadly flaw, and choosing to sell it anyway, is beyond comprehension.

Rolling Stone magazine was pretty cool back then. Or were you reading High Times?
Close, but no banana. It was "Mother Earth News," aka: Mother Jones. Written by Mark Dowie; the internal Ford memos on the testing and actuarial studies that Dowie obtained from disgusted Ford executives were admitted as evidence in the highly successful class action lawsuit that nearly put Ford out of business.

I read High Times too. Rolling Stone...not so much. National Lampoon was my clear favorite though.

You were reading what, "Instinct?"

For some reason, that never works for me. What am i screwing up, HTML-wise?
OMG...I'd forgotten that one. In it's heyday, that mag had some of the funniest stuff I've ever read, then, now, or in-between.

We used to pass them around (there were expensive). One of the editions had a centerfold photo of a girl's bicycle. On the seat was a "Scratch 'N Sniff" box. Somebody had actually scratched almost through the page!

Heady days for a young misanthrope to be sure. Those were the days of the next ice age, global starvation and the population bomb. Dire issues to be solved by enslaving the taxpayer and expnding the role of government. Food rationing anyone?

How did all those predictions turn out?
You got me there: not too well. There's no enslavement of the taxpayer, and the government doesn't have any more of a role in my life today than it did then.

But thanks for asking!

Is that sarcasm I detect with my finely-honed Sardono-Detector?
The "Glenn Beckian" apocalyptic stuff needs perspective. Which usually comes out either as sarcasm or comedy.
