Re: What's with the hair?

As far as I know most departments in the US have a requirment or policy for Officers to have a short "faded" crew-cut hairstyle. Not to be like the military, but just to look uniform and cut back on non-professional looking hairstyles.

As to the article, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully my local PD will re-instate their motor unit...

You are correct sir

Yep I have been warning the FoxNews loving Bushbots (Buz, seruzaw, longride) about this for years. Right now we are in debt up to our eyeballs. Like my first wife , we have delusional thoughts of prosperity when its all because we have our credit card maxed out. We don't have to be competive cause the world thinks our dollar is worth something. Watch for massive devaluations of the dollar. You guys (the rest of the world) will wise up and realize that our dollar is worthless..

Nice article about responsible motorcycling. I'm all for buying American, but only if the products are quality products. Certain jurisdictions favor American companies by mandating purchase of American-made products over foreign-made products... even when they are 1) more costly and 2) show inferior quality/cost benefits. Why reward mediocrity in this fashion?

This is the US, we reward mediocrity everywhere because it's easier than doing things right. Aggregate test scores not up to par? Lower the passing grade. Look at the technology we deploy, broadband and cellular phone service, and then look at what is deployed everywhere else in the world. Not only are we anywhere from one to three generations behind and lagging in overall availability, but in the case of cell service we also insist on using frequencies which deviate from the entire rest of the planet so we have to reinvent the wheel every time. Then to top it off we're charged heavily for the crappy services.

Then you've got the iPod, a device which rules its market but across the board its capabilities pale next to cheaper and better alternatives (this being said by a Mac guy). But people still buy them by the handful anyway. Most people are just drones. They've been told to expect low test scores, so they do. They've been told all American cars suck and Japanese cars are perfect, so that's what they believe. If the market really worked like it was supposed to people would realize they're generally just buying the cheapest to make but most heavily marketed piece of garbage and start demanding better from everything. To paraphrase Jack Nicholson as the Joker, what this country needs is an enema.

Re: What's with the hair?

Buzzcuts help with speed dunkin' for donuts and the "respect my authoritaaaay" we've all come to know and love the nation over. Nothing like a cop with mirror shades, mounty hat, and that John Wayne swagger to say "You'll accept this ticket s***** and like it!"

Oh... I digress. Where are my meds.

Agreed. I can see my U.S. cell-phone (company provided) provider's building (complete with tacky sign) from my office window, but most of my calls get dropped when I try to use from my office. My personal cell-phone (provider is owned by a German outfit where the trains run on time :) ) works everytime and anywhere...

iPods from my daughter's and my experience are very reliable and easy to use. But I agree there are cheaper alternatives.

I always secretly relish the irony when a motor officer is giving me a safety lecture when I'm wearing full leathers or an Aerostich and a full-face helmet, and he's dressed in wool riding pants, a short-sleeve shirt and a half helmet that looks 20 years old. Once I even pointed that out and the cop told me tradition was very important to the CHP, and the pants are tougher than they look (although he told me they cost something like $250 a pair!).

They need to dump the Harleys and the Col. Bogie outfits and get BMWs (I think the FJR1300 would be even better, but I don't want to give them too much parity) and Aerostiches.

I don't know how long a smart Chief of Police will last in any small town with the basic small mentality that goes with being small... I'd give him ....maybe two years before moving on and up.......and the then officers turn into cowboys.

Yeah that's weird isn't it? Perhaps all this information we are told by our information sources is a load of crap. When was the last time that any govt agency told the truth?

To read the newspaper I'd think that the city I live in is a deathtrap. Then I go out for a walk or a ride and see nothing in reality that reflects what I read. That's called a clue.

Smarter Cops

I had the same though while reading through this article. I don't know that I'm ready for smarter motor patrol officers. I'd rather have Barney Fife on a Harley.

How about putting all the smart, efficient, hard working cops on non-traffic duties such as solving homicide, burglary, motorcycle theft rings, etc?

Cliche's aside, I have not had any bad experiences with ticket pad wielding cops. Mostly I get verbal warnings (knock on wood) or lights flashed at me and have been dealt with professionally. I have never been pulled over or signaled to "cool it" by a motorcycle mounted officer.
