Old School vs. New and Improved!

5851 Views 26 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Fenton
As a long-time subscriber to MO, I'm wondering what other seasoned veterans think about the new and improved motorcycle.com, now that it's been in place for a while. I've always been more of a lurker; just reading a lot and adding my two cents every now and again, but I kind of miss the old format and the closer-knit interaction between contributors and other members. Whereas I used to check in every night, my visits have become fewer and far-between.
I guess I'm not opposed to the format and content (and advertising), but it isn't really the same.
What say the rest of you?

Well some ways it's better and some ways it's worse. Irregardless it is what it is, I don't own it so I have to go along with those who do.
I still miss the old forum. We have gained a few members, but have lost the wacky members (except for those Navy guys)that used to make the place really interesting.

Bring back MRALLCAPS, The Highwayman, BIGDX, etc.
The main thing I don't like is the fact that I can't see the entire tree of posts on each thread in the forums. It makes it too hard to navigate because there are only a few levels and you've gotta click on those stupid "more posts below this level" links. WTF? I guess it generates more hits.

BTW bigdx and the highwayman left before the forum change. They had to choose between MO and their trailer registration fees.
+1 on the navigation.

I'm probably missing a lot, but all I do is hit the "New Posts" button.

This morning, I noticed that "Administrator" has dumped a metric butt-ton of old articles on the fora. Saw some dated 2001.

It does seem that we lost a lot of "active" posters. It appears there is only a dozen or so folks that post, unless you count the "First Post"-ers that swoop in to either ask a question or to sell something.
+2 on the navigation. Pisses me off.

I still think that the new website layout leaves a LOT to be desired. I'm more used to it now but I suspect it is intimidating to first-time visitors. Intimidate 'em and they'll disappear. Not good if you're looking for readers and subscribers.
The tragedy is that there are a lot of free alternatives for forum software.
Navigating the forums is a tedious chore. Once I get to the "more replies below current depth" deal, I give up.

I think the forum designers should be required to navigate the Mainstream Choppers replies and try to read every one. They'll change it after that.

The rest of the site works for me although the colors are a bit garish.
Yes, the new version really does suck compared to the old one.
I think all you whiners need to go to the gym. :p I don't find anything here intimidating or hard. I think there are too many places to go here, so they could trim the amount of forums, but the ability to start your own threads, have posting tools, the ability to post pictures, and have sigs more than blows away the old site.
Speaking of whining, it's another 80 degree day here!

Which would be great, except I'm still stuck in a cage while the bike sits, tied the the wall with a charging cable.
KP - is that YOU? :-o

:D

I've ridden 7 of 9 days so far this month (this being the 13th) - and we've had ice-storms, rain, more rain, freezin'-arse cold temps in the mornin' (20's).........
News Flash! LongRide finally gets a ride in!

It's hard to tell, but I think he's on the Knuck!
It was rough, but I made it through dammit!

I bumped my replies per page up so I don't have the "below current depth" as much. I think, uh maybe.
I missed that Fenton guy around here. I saw him over at CW with his pinata stick in hand just pounding that candy filed mule.
Ha!

There may be a lot of candy in that pinata but it's all the exact same flavor... over and over and over.....
Yeah, over here we have different piñatas, each with their own interesting flavor...or is it stench. Either way; don't eat the fury candy.
