Starter Problems

1443 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Trussy10
Having read all the VL1500 posts about starting I can't find my exact problem if anyone can help please. Front cylinder wasn't firing so checked the plug. No spark. Got a new plug and still no spark. Put a multimeter across the coil and it appears duff. Fitted a new coil. When I connect the two wires the bike will not turn over at all. Disconnected the wires and it turns over and runs on the back cylinder. So I still can't check the front cylinder. I know it's an odd one but does anyone have any suggestions please as to where I might start looking
TIA

Will not turn over , as in crank ? Or won't start ?
When you connect the two wires to what exactly ?
Your new coil ??
If so, then that would mean that your new coil is bad too but in a different way.
But I don't think that a coil can fail in a way that will prevent the starter from running.
Is starter turning engine over ? Please explain thouroghly ....
The two wires are the ones with the spade connectors either side of the plug lead. With spade connectors. One is a positive supply and one is thetrigger for the coil to fire the cylinder and yes when I connect them theengine will not crank over at all on the starter.

Many thanks to all who have replied

Go to Manualslib.com and download a PDF version of srevice manual .... Check your kickstand switch , clutch switch for failure ....

Many thanks, I'll have a look at that today.

Thanks again
CDI is shot. Have sent it away for checking over and repair if possible. Be another couple of weeks or so before I get it back.
Thanks for asking
Thanks to the dockers going on strike in the UK its taken about 5 weeks to get this CDI turned around. But guess what!! IIt was found to be faulty and has been repaired. Plugged it in and both cylinders firing. Having now I heard it it must have been duff from day one. Next question. Somewhere I read that by putting a larger amp / hour battery on than the standard it will 'overpower' the decompression need due to the power of turning over. is this a fact and if so anyone know what the biggest amp / hour battery is I can get please. Once again TIA Trussy

Having a really healthy fully charged battery will help but having a bigger one won't necessarily.
Shop around for the largest one that will fit without any modifications.......including the same posts.

Making sure that the main battery cable connections are clean and tight will help too.

Does that model have a "compression release" mechanism ?
If so, do an online search for that as sometimes an "adjustment" can be made to make it work better.
Many thanks for the reply. Next job is all the terminals and connections as you suggest.
