It really depends on the local laws and what you can get away with. I ride dirt bikes on the street with minimal conversion here in VA. However, I do not try to pass VA inspection, opting to take a ticket if I'm caught. I haven't gotten caught yet.

As far as a wheelset goes, there are lots of options. The cheapest method is to build them yourself, out of parts sourced from eBay. I see that some of the pros are now using cast Marzocchi wheels instead of spoked wheels.

If you're searching on the interenet, try using "Supermoto" instead of "Supermotard".

"As far as a license plate goes . . . a few years ago I took off my license plate and wasn't pulled over . . . for over 2 years I rode my (essentially not street legal) Supermotard everywhere in California and nobody paid the slightest bit of attention."

I'm wanting to convert my kid's 2001 XR100 into a street bike - please don't ask why. I can install lights, mirrors and stop lights. Is there any chance I can get a license plate for this contraption from DMV?

I'd check with other's in your state who have done this. OR has recently cracked down on this. Your headlight is probably not DOT, so you'll need to see if they do an inspection in your state or not. Or don't license like others said. Also remember that the tires aren't DOT, but you'll probably switch the tires out as part of the conversion.

CA is currently cracking down on conversions and has sent letters out to owners of improperly registered bikes de-authorizing their plates.

People (umm, of course nobody I know LOL ) had been DMV office shopping, finding places where they could slip stuff past a friendly (or sleeping) DMV worker.

CARB and DMV finally got wise to it, party's over.
