What timing. I was just at Honda of Salt Lake casting lustful eyes at a new blue SV1000 last weekend. Since Triumph has closed down the only dealership in Utah I'm going to forget the Speed Triple and look for another ride. The SV1000 is on the short list.



Now all I have to do is convince my wife that I actually need 5 motorcyles. I know! I'll tell her that since I have an inline four and a V-four and two singles that I need a V-Twin to achieve cosmic balance with the universe.



Think that'll work?

That was a big fear of mine when I got the Triumph, but there are three dealers within 75 miles so I figure I'm safe for now.

When I looked at the SV1000S I thought it looked cramped. The standard one with tube bars wasn't too bad. I'd stick with a nekkid 1200 Bandit myself as I really miss mine

That or hold my breath till the GSX1400 shows up.

I've no desire to drive all the way to Reno to get parts for a Speed Triple.

Well, I've already got a shaftdrive Bandit.. even though it is a bit heavy. Still it's a great sporttouring bike so I'm gonna hang onto it for two-up tours and my daily 85 mile I-15 commute. It simply blows away my buddy's ST1100.

But it's too darned heavy for twistie or around town work. My 700 Magna is good around town and light one-up touring, but isn't a sportbike by any stretch of the imagination.

So I'm in the market for something like an SV1000. I agree that the "S" sucks with it's clip-on bars. The naked SV allows handlebar changes or aftermarket windshields. The crappy seat is easily fixed at the local upholstery shop. I really like the big performance V-twins, but Ducatis and Aprilias are too expensive. So I'm seriously considering the SV1000.

Have you seen the new prices on the Triumphs? I think the '04 'Triple is going to be $8600(!).

And what kind of parts do you need to buy? Other than the 500 mile break-in and 12,000 mile interval service, I've had no reason to go to the dealer (well, other than to get the ECM programming rewritten). Hell, with the Castrol ActEvo erl from Chaparral and the FRAM oil filters at SuperWallies, I don't need to. My buddy ('00 'Triple) is my only other data point, and he hasn't had to go to the dealer either.

Now, my new ST doesn't start properly ( I suspect an incorrect setup), so I guess one should complete a good test drive before you leave the store. I'm waiting 'til my 500 mile service to get it fixed.

Mind you, this is from a guy with a dealer >only< 90 miles away.

GET THE TRIPLE! Then get your driver's license armor-plated.

While you are at the dealership, check out the armchaps from Burberry's. Very Tony! I understand they are coming out with WaxOil versions, for riding in nasty weather.

If you want a sporty V-Twin have you thought about a VTR1000 Honda? up here they go for around $7k brand new, The only bad thing is crummy gas milage and non-adjustable bars

Other than that they're pretty nice bikes, and dirt cheap.

Buy a red one, leave the "996" sticker on and tell everyone it's a Ducati. Loosen the clutch cover to get a bit of a rattle going and you're in!

Same problem as the SV1000S. clip on bars. I'm also leery about the honda's breaking frame problems on the bike.

The only motorcycles that I've ever owned that blew up are Honda and Ducati. I'm still reluctant to buy either of the brands.

I'm sure a used ST4s with helibars would fit the price range.
