Sounds like a great way to end a few more motocyclists lives. Talking on a cell phone while driving an automobile is already thought to cause as much decrease in driving performance as being drunk. Have to imagine cell phone talking while motorcycle riding would have the same or worse affect. Why not just pull over?
I agree- calls need not be made while riding a bike. Granted, people seem to concentrate on the road more when they can keep their hands on the wheel (and now on the handle bars) using hands-free sets, but it is still a dangerous idea.
Besides, if the voice clarity is anything like a Chatterbox, people will not like talking to someone on his or her way to the office doing 70 and 80mph on the freeway.
The main criteria for helmets (and all riding gear) are protection, comfort, and style. I'm pretty sure Bluetooth technology won't enhance any of those. My two cents.
I've never had a bluetooth ... Oh excuse me ...Bluetooth(R)... headset that worked properly (I've had two Sony's and a Chinese noname). Even when they work, the sound is atrocious. I can't imagine adding wind noise and vibration will improve matters. Just my $.02 too.
Shoei and Arai have had years to perfect helmets. What do you want to bet that this new blue tooth helmet made by people who don't really know anything about helmets, is a pile of stinking cow dung when it comes to use, comfort, fit, wind-noise, etc. Why not offer the head-set alone to fit in any helmet?
You know, this sounds like a really bad application of a really good idea. Don't we all complain about cell phone users in cars. Isn't motorcycle riding using more of the brain than anything short of a fighter jet.? I mean DAMN! Just what we need! Between the IDIOTS going out and being a$$holes stunt riding on public roads (in the proper environment it is plenty cool though, but not on my bike), riding in excess of 200MPH (now), and motorcyle dealers continuing to sell sport bikes to novices who then go out and get killed and maimed in steadily increasing numbers, it's just a matter of time before it is going to get damned difficult justifying allowing us on the damn road.
Another harebrained idea, and with an open face helmet, no less. Oh well, let the stupid yuppies splatter themselves all over the place.
The only problem I see, is that they will give motorcycling another black eye. So what's new. Chicago's Sun-Times Columnist Neil Steinberg is already calling all motorcyclists organ- donors, maybe he has some inside information from Motorola/MOMODESIGN.
It only takes 1 very brief moment for someone to fail to yield your right of way. If our total focus is not on the road (100%) then what amount of your focus are you willing to give up when a split second decision determines our fate. A slight delay in observation or reaction to an event can cost lives. Let's not just consider ourselves...our decisions and their consequences affect others and the ones we love.
