I'm gonna make the assumption that if a nation state is subsidizing something it must feel that in the long run it will pay off. Isn't that the rational behind many of the subsedies here? Why we did it for food and not machine building ect... though I'd be interested in hearing an explaination. I can remember when the CNC machines started showing up and they sure as hell weren't Bridgeports.

Funny how your guys got control of congress 2 years ago and since then the real estate market tanked, stock market tanked and the price of oil sky rocketed.

Exxon is a public company Kmo. Just by some stock and you can get in on the big conspiracy.
Geez Buzz, the Republicans controlled Congress since what, the 80's?. Republicans had complete control of both branches for almost 7 years in a row, and it was only after a huge majority of Americans got utterly sick of the job they were doing that they got their asses tossed on the street. But somehow, it's all the Democrats fault for not fixing it all in 24 months. And it will be Barack's fault when he can fix 8 years of Idiot Boy and Cheney in 8 months too. At least the voters can figure this out, and they will.

You're right, I missed it on Brasil vs. Chile. The point remains (unanswered) that they chose to end their oil dependence and we didn't. They aren't looking at economic collapse, we are. Our economy is built on cheap oil, and when we don't have it anymore, we're going to be in big trouble, if we stick our heads up our butts and ignore it again.

If they fix the country as well as Chuck Schumer just fixed IndyMac we'll be in great shape.

I can't wait until our economy is as good as Brazil's!

Oil company ownership is about 40% retirement funds. Wrecking them is a great idea. Then with everyone's retirement destroyed the lefties can sell more of their fraudulent solutions.

Progressives love America. They just hate the legal system, all the people who don't vote the way they do, the right to bear arms, the right to own property, the right to be left alone, the white Anglo-Saxon Christian culture that built the country... well aside from all that and their desire to see dempcracy fail in Iraq and their desire to change everything about this horrible racist greedy country they really really love it! Now if only all those other subhuman people would quit disagreeing with the morally superior progressives everything will be fine.

Ken- just because you sell one product at a loss doesn't mean you're loosing money in your margin. Ask Toyota about that. It's possible to develop a product and sell it at a loss and at the same time create ways to bring that cost down over time. It's not the best way to do business but it is done all the time.
We're stuck in a loop. Congress (both sides- really) builds this front based on non-sense. Our ability to extract oil is as eco-friendly as it gets. We need it and it's available. So, go get it and while you're working on that project develop the replacement fuels. It's not rocket science. Use what you have and get Congress off their a$$es and allow for use of more efficient energies. We need more efficient power plants but the most logical choice for that is slammed by the eco-babies. We could develop more bio-fuel cars but mass production of vehicles that people will buy takes time, too. If Congress doens't let us drill for oil off the Florida Keys the Cubans will be glad to do it for us with the help of the Chinese. Do you think the Chinese give a rats a$$ about our eco-values? At least, if we drill for it we'll control the ability to minimize accidents. When they shut down hundreds of wells off the coast for Katrina dozens of wells had damage but not one drop of oil was actually lost. That's an incredible feat, don't you think? We're good at this drilling stuff and the technology of the future is still in the future. We're working on it at a more rapid pace than in the past, but we need something to get us through the next decade of development. You can make the most effecient (put your product here) but if the price is 2 or 3 times the lesser efficient one then guess who wins- price is what sells in most cases.

Politics and motorcycles go together like bird crap and tacos. As far as the oil deposits go in the MT. region, this isn't the secret that everyone's making it out to be. We sell truck bodies to the oil sands in Alberta, and they've been saying for years that oil would have to rise well above $100/barrel for a sustained period before they (the oil extraction companies) think they'll see people start to move on the expensive extraction required in the US sands region. They'll get started, but oil development moves like molasses.
