Please don't generalize and tar all Canadians with the same brush -- we're talking about British California here. BC is well-known amongst us other Canucks as the land of fruits and nuts, some of which are obviously loose. Besides, everyone knows that loud clutches save lives, not loud pipes.

http://www.glenbrook.k12.il.us/GBSSCI/PHYS/CLASS/sound/u11l2b.html

Blatantly stolen (and paraphrased) from the website:

"The most intense sound which the ear can safely detect without suffering any physical damage (~90db) is more than one billion times more intense than the threshold of hearing ( 0 db.)."

0db = Threshold of hearing

10db= Rustling leaves (10x louder)

20db= Whisper (100x louder)

60db= Normal Conversation (1,000,000x louder)

70db= Traffic (10,000,000x louder)

80db= Vacuum cleaner (100,000,000x louder)

100db= Walkman at max level (10,000,000,000x louder)

120db= Loud Motorcycle (1,000,000,000,000x louder)

And so on, and so on. et. al.

What so many of you are ignoring is the perception of loudness. The human ear is logarithmic also. To "Hear" something as twice as loud, which would be 3 db, requires that the actual sound power be 10 times as loud which is 10db.

And if your car is 85 db you are going to be looking for hearing aids soon. and keeping an mp3 player or other headphone audio above 85db will be bringing on the hearing aids also.

I'm in the tourist business. And the city where I live and work, or at least the businesses, want the biker business. So they encourage the loudest and rudest riders and they, unfortunately, don't see or care about the hundreds of letters of complaint from other tourists, who spend much more money, or from the residents who can't deal with this BS. And then the city officials keep wondering why they can't get re-elected.

And yes, the squids are bad, but you can't hear them coming from a half mile away and they don't pull up right beside 70 tourists at the oldest national monument in the United States and rev the engines to see how many people they can annoy.

It will get to where the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" idiots are right, because it will get where motorcycles will be banned everywhere. Then we won't have to worry about other people noticing the bikes and there is a large group of small people that will either have to grow up or find another way to be obnoxious.

I'd bet on the latter.

I have been riding MX and street bikes since the late 60's and I have HATED LOUD BIKES the entire time. A bike that makes a bit of extra noise that sounds 'tuned' is one thing. A bike that has ear-splitting noise coming from it should be removed from the street. Any bike exceeding 105 dB at 30 feet with full throttle in 2nd gear should be forced to modify to a quieter level. We do not live in a vacuum. We are members of society and the BS line that 'loud pipes saves lives' should be treated as the fertilizer that it is. The loud part is BEHIND the bike and to the sides, not to the front. If we as a sub-group of motorists seriously offend enough folks with stupidly loud bikes, we will find ourselves the victims of over regulation. This is coming into play in Europe where stock bikes will be required to remain stock in the future. Flame away, all you loud a******es. You are wrong and the rest of us are tired of your infantile need to annoy others with your loud bike. Would I support noise ordinances for over loud bikes and cars? Hell yes… I work in the consumer electronics industry and am very aware that noise damages your hearing. Arguing the difference of 120 to 130 dB is valid but stupid. Both will destroy your hearing in short order.

Oh boy. So we’re stupid?

105db at 30 feet is acceptable you say?

That means :

111db at 15 feet

117db at 7.5 feet

123db at 3.25 feet

and a whopping 130 db at 1.625 feet.

And no, it doesn’t matter which gear you are in. 130db will remain 130db.

I’ll refrain from saying the obvious …
