What so many of you are ignoring is the perception of loudness. The human ear is logarithmic also. To "Hear" something as twice as loud, which would be 3 db, requires that the actual sound power be 10 times as loud which is 10db.
And if your car is 85 db you are going to be looking for hearing aids soon. and keeping an mp3 player or other headphone audio above 85db will be bringing on the hearing aids also.
I'm in the tourist business. And the city where I live and work, or at least the businesses, want the biker business. So they encourage the loudest and rudest riders and they, unfortunately, don't see or care about the hundreds of letters of complaint from other tourists, who spend much more money, or from the residents who can't deal with this BS. And then the city officials keep wondering why they can't get re-elected.
And yes, the squids are bad, but you can't hear them coming from a half mile away and they don't pull up right beside 70 tourists at the oldest national monument in the United States and rev the engines to see how many people they can annoy.
It will get to where the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" idiots are right, because it will get where motorcycles will be banned everywhere. Then we won't have to worry about other people noticing the bikes and there is a large group of small people that will either have to grow up or find another way to be obnoxious.
I'd bet on the latter.
