vin on first bike

I have just got my first bike up and running and went to the dmv to get it registered today. Problem is they told me my VIN is wrong. So my question is where do i find the VIN then? I gave them the number off the side of the steering column that said 16N-000981. Didn't look right to me but I've never registered a bike so I wasn't sure.

Look at the neck (where the forks and frame meet- by the front of the tank) right side. You should see 17 total digits and characters.

If the bike was made before 1982 then you probably have 8-11 digits and or characters
