vin on first bike

I have just got my first bike up and running and went to the dmv to get it registered today. Problem is they told me my VIN is wrong. So my question is where do i find the VIN then? I gave them the number off the side of the steering column that said 16N-000981. Didn't look right to me but I've never registered a bike so I wasn't sure.
