Less is more...

I applaud your efforts to keep MO up to date and relevant, but I think you've lost something in translation.

For me, one of my daily joys is to log on, click through the three featured news items and read the rambling, humorous and sometimes even lucid and insightful posts from a familiar community of MOrons. It approached reading a post card from home -- familiar names, discussion threads and a sense of family dominated a focused and easy-to-access Forum.

Now, there's more, more, more of everything. I'm sure paying advertisers and manufacturers love the exposure they get, but I can find their sites just fine without clicking through MO to get there.

I suppose I'm just another parallel twin riding retro-grouch Luddite, but I won't be renewing when my subscription expires. Motorcycling is a people sport, and I'm sorry to see the family scatter to the four corners of cyber-forum oblivion.

Nice try, guys, and I hope it works out for everyone, but from here out, I'll just spend my precious advertising-consumption time riding instead.

Hmmm... you just might be on to something...

Did that already. Still not nested in full (see my reply to longride).

So does cerebral palsy. That doesn't make it right.
Shizuki, it's simple. The problem you're having is you just don't like the fact that the new forums are a pain in the ass and far inferior to the old version.
One other new feature of them that tickles me is that if the comments are nested more than 4 deep then the little comments box says "More replies below current depth" and there is no setting to change the "current depth." However, helpfully you can click on the worthless link and then read the post to determine if it was something you wanted to read. And the punch yourself in the eye to fix your headache.

Basically if you want to read all the comments and track who is replying to whom you must click back and forth from the little comments box to the area below, and if something is nested more than 4 deep, well, that thread has gone on too long anyway. Or you can switch to linear mode and just read them as one long list of posts in chronological order. Or wait, not exactly one, since it's paged.. so.. pick a page and read that page.

Lots of bells and whistles went into making this the way it is! That's what you get with off-the-shelf vertical portal software tools though.

Large Photos

Hi!

When I try to view large photos, I only get a message that I should register. But I am registered - or at least should be. I can log on with my old MO password, shouldn't that be enough? What am I doing wrong?

A few quick suggestions:

If a post is in reply to a previous post, please mark it and the link to get back. The number in the upper right corner could refer back if you started sequencing from the first post.

Please put date of original posting in the titles or headlines of articles, reviews, etc. It is always disappointing to see a new helmet review and find out it is from 2005 when you get there.

And finally, the threaded view containing complete text rather than headlines only was very effective. The hybrid view seems pretty useless!

And for the second finally, thanks for building and maintaining a great site. good luck with going the "free" route!

Krebs, send me your address so I can send you a fruit basket and bundt cake. I can't thank you enough for putting into words far better than I have the enormity of the suckitude of this forum design.

I'm actually depressed about this. MO was my favorite place to hang out and chew the fat online. It's been fun hangin' with you bastards, but now it's just too much goddamn work. I'll miss this place.

I'll keep an eye out for the premium-only keep-out-the-riff-raff forums and maybe pop in and say hi occasionally.

(Note to MO - this format is fine for brief info-only communication where radical thread segregation can be an organizational benefit. For the extensive, shoot-the-breeze style of MO News discussions, it's like having a dinner party with every guest in a separate room.)

I'd rather have a Cuban cigar than a fruit basket. Or maybe a Buena Vista Social Club album. Or some nice Havana Club Anejo.

Avalanche of new articles

Yes, yes, bring on the avalanche of new articles! ;)
You have it buddy... and when all of our eyes get used to the change, we'll will find that MO2 launched with 4 new features, not just one like we're all used to.

Most obvious is the 1098 Review:

Next is a product review from our old pal Gabe and myself:
http://www.motorcycle.com/products/new-gear-for-a-new-year-51955.html

Our launching feature event is the Legend of the Motorcycle show:
http://www.motorcycle.com/events/2007-legend-of-the-motorcycle-51956.html

And Fred Rau speaks his peace in his latest column on Advertising right this way,

Enjoy!

I wonder about the list also...seems to me it should be alphabetical...that eliminates the "who paid the most" issues...IMNSHO!
For those still wondering, the list is based on market share. Buy more Buells and watch them run up the list... JB can only fit so many bikes into his garage! Think of it like a fund-raising thermometer outside your local church. ;)

Change for the better!

The new changes are incredible! Before the webzine was more of a reliable and trusted resource. It was simple to navigate, a great reference manual, but lacked style and presentation.

This new format only took a minute to acclimate to the navigation, and is a fantastic evolution. Thanks for all your hard work!

I'd suggest making the forums' "threaded" view mode the same as the old MO used to be (for the old guys), the flat view the same as regular forums are nowadays, and in the hybrid view inverse the post/threads positions: put the post being viewed in the small frame (make that frame bigger, cause it's too cramped at the moment) and the threads list (looking the same as it used to, as they now look too cramped to be read as easily as they used to in old MO) take the rest of the page.

That way (in the hybrid mode), you could browse most of the threads in a breeze like it used to be, and just click on a particular post to make the page zip back to the portion of the page where the post is displayed in full.
And then have a button next to that post link back to where you were browsing before clicking on said post.

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
